W L Doc Selman of Kountze district clerk for Hardin county announced his candidacy for re election. He cited experience and work with judges lawyers witnesses juries and jury commissioners and noted filing fee increases to Sept 1 1957 now paid into county salary funds. He pledged economical efficient service if reelected.
Port Arthur man L. W. Mershon was fined 100 dollars and costs in Justice of the Peace Berniece Seale's court for allegedly setting a Jan. 18 grass fire to burn land for a hay field on Nona Mills lands north of Kountze. Texas Forest Service official Billy Eaves filed the charge after more than 80 acres of Nona Mills Co. timberland burned. Damages were estimated at 10 dollars per acre by Tom Easley of Nona Mills Co.
Silsbee dropped a 53 to 42 decision to French in District 11 AAA action. Terry Gossett and Charlie Robinson led Silsbee with 16 points each as Poland battled flu and Parker scored twice. Silsbee will face Port Neches and Victor next before a non district game with Port Arthur.
Friday January 31 is the last day to qualify as a voter by paying the poll tax. If not paid by midnight, voter eligibility ends. County totals show 1084 poll taxes paid to date. deputies anticipate increases. Elections will choose city and county officials, school trustees, and state and national officials.
Three men posted bonds in county court Monday morning after pleading not guilty to charges of driving while intoxicated and carrying a pistol. Clifford H. Jones faced pistol charges while Wesley B. Rutherford and Wesley E. Collier were charged with DWI. Lawrence Paul Jones of Silsbee had earlier been charged with assault with intent to murder in justice court.
Hardin County grand jury returned seven rape indictments two cases involve six defendants from Silsbee and one from Kountze. Additional four indictments for second offense drunk driving were issued. Wakefield Collins and Frank Doyle Farmer named among the second offense DWIs with others unnamed. Deputy Willis Selman and District Clerk Willis Selman provided the details. bonds set at 2500 for most and 10000 for Puckett.
Silsbee donors contributed 1094 to the March of Dimes drive during a Saturday telethon. Total reported for Silsbee reached 2123.48 with committees still completing reports. Firemen hosted a sausage and hot cakes sale at the station from 11 am to 7 pm. C Z Pope chaired the event with all Fire Department staff aiding.
Newton Hopkins of Silsbee was elected a director of the Southwestern Ice Manufacturers Association at a Dallas meeting last week. He is partner and manager of Silsbee Ice Co. and Kountze Ice Co. and a partner in Sabine Ice Service in Orange and City Ice Co. in Natchitoches. Hopkins is active in Silsbee civic affairs.
Howard L. Coffey, formerly of Beaumont, received a 3000 dollar fine and a five year prison sentence for his role in the Sour Lake State Bank robbery of December 1956. Both sentences were suspended by Federal District Judge Lama Cecil. Coffey pleaded guilty to receiving concealing 905 dollars from the bank. Billy Starnes of Voth, the actual holdup man, is serving 15 years in a federal pen. The case was in federal court as FDIC insured funds were involved. Coffey’s Hardin county indictment was dropped. The car used in the holdup was traced to Coffey.
A silver coffee sale will be held Friday and Saturday in Santa Fe Park, hosted by Nu Phi Mu chapter of Beta Sigma Phi led by Betty Weems. Coffee and donuts will be served, with all donations and proceeds aiding the March of Dimes. business people are invited during coffee breaks.
Hardin county unit of the Hale Aiken committees for study of public schools met in the Kountze school cafeteria Wednesday at 7 30 P M County chairman E P Prewitt said the organization for county study was completed and subcommittees for various phases were appointed Representatives from Silsbee Sour Lake Kountze Loeb Chance Saratoga and Batson attended
Silsbee city council tabled a grade separated crossing plan for the Santa Fe tracks after a Chamber of Commerce review. The group urged progress while council members noted other railroad-related projects like park and sewer easement ahead.
Silsbee Pony League parents will meet Tuesday Jan 28 at 7 30 p m in the Junior High School auditorium. Officers and directors will be elected and plans set for the coming baseball season. Sponsoring towns include Silsbee Kountze and Chance Loeb with one other town undecided. All parents of players are invited per L J Ratliff outgoing president.
John White the state commissioner of agriculture visited Silsbee Bee office after meeting in Kountze with the Hardin county committee on Fire Ant Eradication. He praised county efforts led by County Agent B E Rea and noted a test plot on Frank Carpenter’s land in Sour Lake. State, local, and federal agencies coordinate to combat imported fire ants in Texas.
The Twentieth Century Club met at Mrs. E. M. Prewitt’s home with cohostess Mrs. Frank Grote. A social hour and salad course were shared with 18 members and two guests. Members W L Brigance and L D Self, aided by W C Britton, presented a program on Homes of the Old Testament and Homes of the New Testament. The next meeting will be at Mrs. W J Poshataske’s home with cohostess Mrs. Kate Blackwell.
The Ladies of Village Creek will host a Tuesday coffee on January 27 at 2 PM at the home of Mrs. A D Hanson. Proceeds go to the local March of Dimes drive. An annual event, it engages residents in supporting the charity.
Hardin County business growth shows Silsbee as the county’s dominant hub with 154 manufacturers wholesalers and retailers listed in the Dun and Bradstreet Reference Book as of November 1957. County totals stand at 308 with Silsbee comprising more than half. Robert C. Cushman of Houston released the figures.
Mrs Mary Katherine Prather deputy grand matron district 4 section 2 will make her official visit to the Kountze Order of Eastern Star tonight at 7 30 in the Masonic Temple in Kountze Mrs La Royce Jones of Edna Texas district deputy grand matron of district 4 of the Grand Chapter of Texas will also be a visitor at this meeting.
