Federal court ends Hardin County redistricting testimony

U S District Judge Joe J Fisher of Beaumont heard final testimony in the Hardin County Redistricting Suit and recused himself. Attorneys brief by Jan 15 and replies by Feb 1 1971. A new judge will rule with a spring 1971 termination likely.

Hijacker Is Caught At Kountze

Robert Harris of Kountze was jailed in Hardin County after an armed robbery at Bairds Tex-Gas in Kountze on December 11. Harris was arrested soon after and arraigned on armed robbery charges before Rex Moore. Bond set at 5000 dollars. About 150 dollars was taken from the cash register. Investigation by Sheriff’s office and Kountze Police.

Silsbee Drivers License Office To Close Next Week

The Silsbee Drivers License Office will be closed Tuesday December 22 through the Christmas weekend. The DPS Drivers License Division will reopen Monday December 28. The Kountze office also closes on Wednesday December 23.

Hardin County Commissioners reject redistricting plan

In a 3 to 2 vote the Hardin County Commissioners Court refused to adopt the Citizens' Committee plan for redistricting. The decision followed a federal hearing where Judge Joe Fisher recused himself. The dispute centers on boundary lines for Silsbee and precinct distributions, with further votes pending.

FBI to Probe Alleged Police Brutality in Silsbee

At a Dec. 14 city council meeting city manager Ronald Hickerson and Police Chief Edgar Blood announced FBI has been asked to investigate allegations by Hazel Jenkins regarding Detective Morris Cole. Jenkins had accused Cole of beating Lonnie Holman on Nov. 21 at the police station. Dr. Horacio Suarez disputed treating Holman.

Lumberton Board Fires Eichman Names New Superintendent Talk

Lumberton Independent School District ends Nelson Eichman’s four year service after a 6-1 board vote on December 10. The board plans Wednesday night to discuss hiring a new superintendent as district faces enrollment growth and tight finances. Eichman says he has been fired and will serve until January 13 with contract through July 1, 1973. He and his family praise the area as they prepare to move.

Final Rites For Grover L. Will, 52, Held Wednesday

Funeral services for Grover L. Will of Silsbee were held at 10 a at Former Funeral chapel with Rev. E E Castilan officiating. Burial followed at Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Liberty. Will died after arriving at Silsbee Doctor's Hospital. He was a Beaumont native, WWII veteran and Bataan Death March survivor who endured 44 months as a Japanese prisoner of war. He is survived by his father, four brothers, and multiple sisters across Texas and Wyoming.

Gun thieves operate in Silsbee city weekend thefts

Police log shows two auto thefts reported in Silsbee on December 11 and 12. Brown Marble's vehicle near West Gibson was broken into Friday night and two 12 gauge shotguns were stolen. B J Williams on Knapple Road reported a 1966 Ford pickup entry with a .308 Winchester rifle stolen. Investigated by Patrolmen Ed Thedford and James P. Doane.

Lumberton GI Dies After Freeway Hit and Run Accident

Johnny William Greene twenty of Lumberton died at St Elizabeth Hospital after being struck by a northbound car on Eastex Freeway as he attempted to cross the road from a stalled vehicle. H J Lee Sandlin of 5115 Avie was the driver. Funeral services set for 2 p m at Farmer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev James Bradford officiating. Burial at Bumstead Cemetery.

Red Cross First Aid Course Completed By 38 Persons

Forty eight? 38 Silsbee volunteers Boy Scouts and citizens earned Red Cross eight hour first aid certificates. Fire Chief John Busby said the course ran Mondays at the Silsbee Fire Hall from November 18 to December 14 with Ralph Allen and Kenny Cropper of the Beaumont Fire Department instructing. Fifteen local firemen passed the final exam. The program taught artificial respiration and first aid techniques.
