Holiday greetings highlight safety and goodwill during the season while honoring Sikeston citizen Herb Walton. The obituary notes his quiet, unfussy leadership in American Legion, Chamber of Commerce and service clubs, his influence with farmers, and his long association with the Sikeston Ford agency before his paralysis.
State Highway Patrol reports 15 area accidents over the weekend with one death and eight injuries. Notable fatality: Henley E. Tee, 48, of Poplar Bluff, died when his car overturned on Route May 66 near Poplar Bluff. Survivors include relatives across Missouri and Indiana. Funeral plans set at Greer, Croy & Fitch in Poplar Bluff with Masonic rites. Other crashes near Parma, Jackson, and Havai resulted in injuries and citations for careless driving and intoxication.
The Malone Lions Club hosts its annual free food show Monday at 10 a.m. in the Malone theatre. Admission is by canned goods or food parcels, donated to baskets for needy families at Christmas. The lineup includes Trap Happy Uncle Tom's Cabin Buck Rogers and other titles, with proceeds aiding local families.
Jennie Davis a 16 year old Charleston student presented two readings at the Kiwanis Club in the Dima Hotel. One is an original piece titled Magic Night about Prom night tragedy and the other Christmas Gift about a crippled girl who dreams of Christmas and learns the greatest gift is knowing the Christ child. Next week the Kiwanis plan a brief 15 minute session before Christmas Eve.
A Kelso area crash on Highway 61 killed Mrs. Liovy Armstrong 38 and her daughter Geraldine Armstrong 17 of Painton. Granddaughters Sharon 3½ and Janice 2 were severely injured. Arm strongs were en route home from a Kelso filling station when their car collided with a Pepsi Cola truck driven by Griggs Rettig 43 of Sikeston. Rettig sustained minor injuries and remained at the scene.
Dadds TM Felker, counts collector, announced today that in the first 11 days a branch collector's office at the city administration building has collected $152,595.15 in taxes, including $32,195.67 from Mercantile Mortgage Co. for hundreds of homes. County totals for November reach $200,779.19 with drainage and levy taxes and merchants licenses. Felker praised rapid payments and noted Benton office is receiving taxes quickly.
The National Farm Loan Association of Sikeston held its 41st annual session with George D Doerr of Dexter reelected as director and chosen president for his 11th term after a board reorganization. A C Greer of Charleston reelected as vice president. other directors include Martin H Littleton Lilbourne Alwin G Gasser Sikeston and Vincent Dirnberger Oran.
First Christan Church seeks 100000 for a sanctuary and reports 70,456 pledged by 103 individuals and families with 56 more to contact. Campaign chairman Tom F Baker says goal will be reached as Church Board leader J R Harwell cites community faith. Board plans to submit building plans to the congregation after year start.
Firemen ask for extra toys to prepare gifts for Christmas. Used or outgrown toys can be donated at two fire stations or picked up by calling GR 1-1511 or GR 1-3558.
Fire department responded to 328 Petty street Tuesday evening at Mildred Thomas's home. An oil stove overheated and was tossed outdoors by the owner after excitement. No damage reported.
Charleston Lions will judge the Christmas lighting contest with twelve awards in two categories for home and yard decor. Judging begins Thursday night and ends Friday night from 7 to 11 pm. Homes should be lit during judging hours. First, second, and third place will be awarded for house and yard decorations.
East Prairie residents suffer multiple injuries after a car rear ends a parked truck two miles east of town on Highway 80 at 3 20 pm on Tuesday. Driver Annie Bain 30 and several passengers are hospitalized with fractures facial injuries and bruises. Investigators shift to a possible unlit truck cause as a 16 year old and a bar visit are considered. Earlier, a 9 15 am collision two miles south of Sikeston on Highway 61 sent James Davis 27 and his mother with injuries to Missouri Delta Community Hospital.
Randel De wain Oliphant, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Olphant of East Prairie, died at 1 30 a m Saturday from a brain hemorrhage. He played three quarters of a B basketball game against Kelly High Friday night, then collapsed at home after eating a sandwich. Doctors moved him to St Marys hospital where he died about an hour later. Cause unknown. no clear link to play established. Oliphant, a sophomore, was active in academics and athletics.
Mrs Sylvia Ashlin Fage of 418 Ruth street died at Delta Community Hospital after a three year illness. Funeral services were held at Welsh Chapel with interment in Waixer cemetery near Bloomfield. Born December 13 1905 at Bloomfield she was the daughter of Dann W and Minnie Harper Aslin. She married David H Page in 1928 who survives, along with four brothers and four sisters named in the obituary.
Herbert Walton longtime Sikeston resident and former Walton Williams Ford dealer died at 10 30 Monday at his home 110 Maplewood Drive He fought years to regain health after a paralytic stroke and remained cheerful His survivors include wife Mary Beck daughter Linda Kay Walton two nieces and several siblings Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church Sikeston with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery
A report by T A Roberts shows Scott County raised 41463 in November toward a 1957 total of 516373, reaching 87.8 percent of its annual Bond quota. statewide, Arthur Atkinson cites Missouri November sales at 10739569, totaling 128818615 or 84.7 percent of the 1957 quota. Among Bootheel counties only Stoddard has reached and surpassed its quota by month end.
Southeast Missouri landowners demand faster surface water removal at the Sikh annual Lakdowners meeting in Warden. They back a plan by Everett Gee to divert about half of Little River floodwaters into the Mississippi within 20 miles, funded by a land tax over 30 years.
