Albert Otis Allen Jr. publisher of the New Madrid County Record and longtime postmaster since 1935 died at Southeast Missouri Hospital after a brief illness. Born July 1 1900 in Jefferson City he was son of Albert Otis Allen Sr. who founded the paper. Surviving are three daughters and eight grandchildren. He served on the school board and held civic posts in New Madrid and southeast Missouri.
Sikeston Junior Chamber of Commerce president Bob Porter says regular Jaycees Tuesday night meetings are canceled until the second Tuesday in the new year January 7. All members are urged to attend the first meeting next Friday.
Preliminary figures from the Bureau of Census show the 1957 cotton ginned as of December 18 fell by 295,213 bales from 1956. State totals and counties list runs and limiters in runnings bales with declines across Missouri districts and neighboring counties.
C L Crowe manager for Western Adjustment and Inspection Co announced a special office has been set up in Chaffee with a supervisor and several adjusters to expedite storm damage claims. Preliminary estimates of damage exceed 500000 with stock companies liable.
C E Daddy Felker county collector said the city branch collection totaled 194960.24 up to noon Saturday and will stay open through year end except Christmas and New Year. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and until noon Saturdays. Mrs Felker in Benton reports Benton office collections also high.
Judge Marshall Craig of Missouri's 28th Judicial Circuit orders creation of a juvenile officer for Cape Girardeau Scott and Mississippi Counties. Applicants may contact Judge Craig Sikeston or Judge Brady Cape Girardeau. Salary funded from county funds prorated by population. detention home plans ongoing with no decisive action.
Paul B Crouthers died of a heart attack Sunday at his plantation home south of Lilbourn Missouri where he built a 2000 acre operation. Born August 15 1898 in Wattesville Arkansas he moved from tenant farming to large land holdings including a 5600 acre area near Caron and later a 5000 acre plantation. He married Ila Irene Bixler in 1926 and left four children James Buddy Crouthers Paul Colley Crouthers Margaret Noe and Emma Schaefer plus six grandchildren. Surviving siblings include H C and Roy Crouthers Rebecca Nance and May Fisher.
It was learned this morning that the list of winners submitted for the Lions and sponsored Christmas lighting contest contained an error. B. L. McCampbeill of 115 E. Trottier should have been listed instead of W. W. Cummins, same address.
In a coordinated effort between Scott and Stoddard county police, a girl and three boys were arrested on burglary and larceny charges for break-ins at the Dillard home near Gray Ridge and at Crowder Tavern. They admitted taking a TV, two fans, a shotgun, a suitcase, shells, and cash and cigars from the two locations.
A would be robber tried to rob John Moll, bookkeeper for Crenshaw Distributing Co., at Edwards IGA on Highway 60 West. Moll, closing at 7:35, hid the money bag and escaped as the suspect fled toward Keller’s Latinery. The bag and cash were later recovered muddy but intact. A break in at Edwards IGA netted 105 dollars, cakes, whiskey and other items. Police arrested four after the incident: G. E. Gerding fined for parking near a fire plug, Gentry White to appear for loud muffler, Dyer Garner fined for careless driving.
CHARLESTON Raymond Lew of East Prairie was seriously injured Friday at 4 p m when his late model auto collided with a pickup on Highway 55 between Diehllstadt and Benton. The truck driver was unnamed. Lew received emergency aid then was taken to St Marys Hospital in Cairo with facial cuts, bruises, and internal injuries. Mrs Lew, returning to East Prairie, and the truck driver were not seriously hurt.
State Highway Commission weekly bulletin ends December 31. Notes on U S Route 60 Stoddard County from Fisk eastward with new grading and paving at several points. Three bypasses under construction eight miles east of Fisk. Caution urged for shoulders from one mile east of Fisk to 353 miles east. Route 25 Dunklin County adds grading between White Oak and Kennett with shoulder work and severe caution advised.
Mr and Mrs Lynn Ingram are the parents of a baby boy born December 18 at the Mo Delta Community Hospital.
Chaffee residents and volunteers from nearby areas joined farmers utility crews railroad workers and telephone staff in clearing debris after a tornado ripped through the city Wednesday night. Police and deputies kept onlookers away as power and phone service were knocked out and emergency generators were brought in from nearby towns. Radio-equipped patrols and amateur operators aided outside communication during the relief effort.
A weekend tally from Troop E reports one death and 19 injuries across 17 traffic accidents. A Kennett man, 24, Shirley Dean McMahon, died when his car hit a tractor-trailer on Highway 25 near East Prairie. Other incidents involved drivers from Sikeston Cape Girardeau Fredericktown and Jackson, with injuries and arrests noted. Red Cross relief operations moved to Chaffee with meals for workers and residents. power restored, phones partially, and widespread property damage from the storm.
Ronald Lee, city collector, reported this morning that city tax collections through Dec. 21 this year exceed totals through Dec. 22, 1956 by 5048.70. Through Dec. 21 this year the city has collected 114,574.17, versus 169,525.47 through Dec. 22 last year, about 71 percent of total taxes. Real estate 73 percent, personal property 66 percent, Merchants' tax 69 percent. Taxpayers may pay until Dec. 31, 1957. penalties start after that date.
The Sikeston Fruit and Produce Co. has about 40 fine Christmas trees. Charlie Mitchell announced this morning he would give them to anyone who came and asked for one.
