Time for planning winter cover crops

Planning for winter cover crops begins with securing seed supplies says Evin Burke chair of Scott County Agricultural Conservation Committee. The 1949 program offers aid for seeding 15 pounds per acre of winter vetch at 3.00, 10 pounds crimson clover at 1.50, and 25 pounds Austrian winter peas at 1.50 per acre. In 1948 Scott County farmers used the program on 4140 acres.

Wheat Allotments For Scott County Announced

A 1950 wheat allotment of 26 038 acres for Scott county was announced by the county Agricultural Conservation Committee. The allotment is part of the national 8 9 million acre program for the next year. Committee chairman Evin Burke explains that notices will be mailed to growers and that allotments cap government spending on price support rather than enforce production. He notes the 1949 crop was smaller but still the third largest on record, and urges compliance to possibly avoid future quotas. Burke adds that if production aligns with needs, marketing quotas may not be necessary.

Increase in Funds for Agricultural Conservation Program

Congress approved a 1950 Agricultural Conservation Program raising Missouri’s share to about nine million dollars from last year’s seven point nine million. The Production and Marketing Administration says assistance caps at 2500 dollars per person, with emphasis on improving pasture and seeding grasses and legumes. The program supports soil conservation practices on land shifted from production, while the wheat allotment for 1950 targets voluntary reduction of about 14 million acres.
