Weather has halted threshing for over two weeks with wet cold keeping farmers from gathering crops. Potatoes already in ground survive a hard freeze, haying is delayed, and wild grass stands untouched. Some frosts aid corn, while gardens overflow with preserves as households store produce. A sunny October could lift Cheyenne County’s crop prospects statewide.
Congressman Norris addressed about 200 listeners Tuesday evening, defending insurgent Republicans and the progressive cause. He condemned special privilege and boss manipulation, urged duty over party control, and predicted progress toward greater happiness and brotherhood, though the talk drew modest enthusiasm. Fred Letts, formerly a Union Pacific train-master, has rejoined the railroad as a passenger conductor and will reside in North Platte. Pascal Ford completed final homestead proof before County Judge Gapen on September 21. witnesses were William Krueger and Richard Krueger.
B A Wilson and family visited Mrs Alfreda Null on Tuesday while en route to North Platte after a three months stay in California. They traveled the entire distance by automobile. John Ulrich of Petersburg bought a section of land nearby and returned home to prepare moving onto his new property.
Shirley Wilson and her family returned to Omaha on Tuesday after visiting Sidney friends and relatives. Mr Wilson recently bought a $16000 residence in Dundee, a fashionable suburb of Omaha.
W A Reed the well driller has just returned from a three months trip to California and the Northwest. He arrived in Sidney only half an hour before a drilling job was offered, so he plans to stay while business remains good.
W H Jones of South Omaha, stockholder in the St George Ranch, visited his nephew Carl Jones, the ranch manager, and noted extensive improvements including a modern silo. Jones is a prominent South Omaha commission man.
Ranch figure Frank H King who lost his sight months ago underwent cataract removal at St Joseph hospital in Denver last Saturday. Doctors will determine the success in a few days. Mrs King accompanied him to Denver. B K Bushee returned from the eastern part of the state traveling with the Roosevelt train from Hastings to Omaha and Lincoln, hearing speeches en route. He spoke at a progressive senatorial mass meeting in Lewellen last week and earned progressive endorsement for state senator.
Judge Grimes adjourned the September 1911 term after sustaining a new trial motion in Noah G. Brewer v Union Pacific. Judgment by confession for 5000 plus costs. plaintiff to pay costs. Miss Amelia Webbs came back Thursday from Bridgeport after her sister was seriously injured in a buggy crash Tuesday. She and two pupils were thrown when the buggy tongue broke and struck the ground, leaving Miss Wehrs unconscious for 48 hours and later paralyzed. Her condition improves but the outcome remains uncertain.
