Dalton Coop Assa wins top lighted parade float prize

Dalton Coop Association won the Wheatbelt Public Power award for the best lighted float in the Dalton Fall Festival parade. The two day event drew several thousand attendees with showings of football, horse shoe, archery, model aircraft, square dancing, and a university game on TV.

Wind storm damages Lafler farm near Sidney

Charles Lafler reports a Friday evening wind storm about six and a half miles south and east of Sidney damaged his alfalfa field irrigation pivot. The center pivot shifted 25 feet, a wheel fell off, and the concrete base cracked. Replacement could cost 20 to 25 thousand dollars. Ground feed was scattered and corn knocked down as rain followed. Lafler suspects a small tornado but no funnel cloud was reported.

Oliver Dam Recreation Project Approved by State Officials

The Natural Resources Commission approved an $808,500 Oliver Dam Recreation Project for southwest of Kimball in Lincoln. Final design due in five months, with other state federal and private funds to follow. Construction could begin by mid to late spring and the lake could fill over about a year with a maximum depth of 24 feet.

Nebraska Board chair urges limits on remedial admission

Lincoln reports Robert Simmons Jr of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents urged refusing admission to high school graduates with educational deficiencies and discontinuing remedial courses. He defined deficiencies as weak reading writing and math skills.

Council to Hear Gas Rate Increase Request Tonight

The Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co. is expected to seek a 10 percent rate hike at tonight’s City Council meeting set for 7:30 in the council chambers. The agenda includes a Cheyenne County Chamber report on the Interstate 80 Development Committee, district water and sewer assessments, paying district bids for the Arlo Jones addition, and a recheck of the Jones addition plan. Also on the docket are requests for a King Street loading zone and for sidewalks on Summit between 1520 Summit and El Rancho.
