Potter Days Celebrate Biggest Parade in Years
Potter Days drew large crowds for a two day celebration with 50 parade entries. Mercheim Builders won outstanding float with Potter Co-Op Elevator and Potter Volunteer Firemen taking second and third. Top kids floats were led by Huat-Lows Jéan Griffith family entry. Adults clowns top honors went to Jim West and Legion Auxiliary. Best decorated bikes awarded to Curt Nielsen and others. The parade closed the event Saturday after cloudy morning skies. 79 Old Timers registered with long county residences. horseshoes introduced a new contest won by Bert Alexander. Local sports saw Potter High beat St Anthony’s and then defeated the Old Timers.

Emma Grunwald 86 of Weeping Water died Wednesday evening in a Weeping Water Rest Home after a period of failing health. Attending funeral services were her son Walter Grunwald of Sidney with his wife and three nieces Mrs Lowry Lindell Mrs Bernie Busboom and Mrs Harold Johnson who had traveled from Gurley Fort Morgan Colorado and returned yesterday.

Nebraska Wheat Queen Contest Seeks Entrants Sponsors
For 1963 Wheat Queen contest entries and sponsors are being sought ahead of the 1962 state convention of Wheat Growers and Wheat Hearts in Nebraska. Entries must be filed by October 15, with Mrs. Harold Tremain coordinating locally. Sponsors may be wheat grower groups, farm and Rural Youth bodies, Chambers of Commerce, Junior Chambers, civic, community, commercial and service clubs. Candidates must reside in their home county.

About 230 volunteers wives and guests attended the North Platte Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association awards banquet in Gurley Saturday night. State officials and fire service leaders presented trophies for tournament events held in August at Gering and announced co championship awards to Chadron and Dalton for the traveling trophy.

Richard Borcher Dies in Idaho at 31
Richard Borcher, 31, former Sidney resident, died Friday in Pocatello Idaho after a period of failing health. He farmed a barber shop in Pocatello, was born August 23, 1931 in Sidney, attended local schools, and served at Sioux Army Depot. He married Joan Mahaffey in 1955. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 a.m. from Gehrig and Son Funeral Home with Rev. C. C. Boye officiating. burial in Greenwood Cemetery. He leaves wife Joan, siblings Virgil Borcher, Mrs. Glen Haber, mother Edna Colson, step-parents Kenneth Moses, Mrs. Leila Handran, Mrs. Alice Seeley, and Mrs. Irene Walsh. His father preceded him in death.

The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben will present state firemanship and fire prevention awards during the Rodeo and Live Stock Show at Ak-Sar-Ben Coliseum. Ernest Wolf of Wisner Fire Department will receive a gold medal and $50 for heroism. Hooper head Ed Peterson leads top Fire Prevention plaque and $200 for department equipment, with additional plaques and $100 for Red Cloud, Ralston, and Gering departments. Dalton Fall Festival Opens Today With Parades Planned
Daltonites greet the 1962 Fall Festival opening at the high school auditorium with entries accepted, carnival rides ready, and a Monday variety program. Tuesday features judging at 8 am, a morning parade at 10 30, an evening parade at 7 30 with lighted floats, plus cash prizes from 75 to 20 dollars and a Wheat Belt trophy for best lighted float. A horsemanship contest, street sports, and softball and Pee Wees games are slated for Tuesday afternoon as Dalton invites all to join the autumn festival.

William Smith 80 Dies After Illness in Colorado
William Henry Smith 80 of Eckley Colorado died Friday night in a Sterling hospital after a three week stay. Funeral services were held at 2 pm at Community Church Eckley with Rev. Robert Tull. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery Breadwater follows under Gehrig and Son arrangements. He was born May 22 1831 Tecumseh and married Umma Bell Duke in 1913. He lived in Yuma County and Sidney before moving to Eckley in 1927 where he resided until his death. Survivors: two sons Frank and Ernest, a daughter Viola, six grandchildren, three great grandchildren.

Pueblo Youth Leads Law On Wild Car Chase
A 15 year old from Pueblo stole his family car after an argument with his girlfriend and led a high speed 55 mile chase from Potter to east of Chappell with troopers and Sidney police pursuing. He was unharmed when his car left the road, and his parents were unaware of the incident until contacted by officers. The youth had previously used a gas station in Colorado Springs before the Potter incident. no prior juvenile record was found.

A one car accident occurred at 11 am Sunday on Highway 19 one tenth of a mile south of Sidney. Sgt Mel Busekist says Thomas Howerter, 79, of Sidney was driving a 1949 Ford that apparently fell asleep, veering into an east borrow pit and causing $50 damage.
