Perfect Weather Fetes Dalton Festival and Floats

Dalton Fall Festival drew near record crowds and bright floats in a two day event. Center School swept parade honors, Dalton Gas Service took second, Dalton State Bank third, with Lions Club winning the Wheat Belt trophy for best lighted float. Horse divisions, decorated bicycles, and numerous participants from Dalton, Gurley, and surrounding towns showcased a large, diverse exhibit with extensive agricultural and craft entries earning top prizes for individuals and households alike.

Kimball Hosts VFW District II Fall Meet This Sunday

The fall meeting of District II Veterans of Foreign Wars and Auxiliary will be held Sunday in Kimball. Posts from Scottsbluff, Bridgeport, Sidney and Kimball attend. men meet in the VFW hall, the Auxiliary in the 4-H Building at Kimball County Fairgrounds. Auction Dollars Promote Sidney Merchants Weeklong Event

Sidney merchants launch Auction Dollars with purchases to fund a prize auction on Thursday September 27. Two shows begin at 4 PM and 7 30 PM east of the courthouse featuring Belle Starr and troupe a trained monkey and Wes tern music. Auction to follow the 7 30 PM performance with prizes donated by local businesses and two banks not issuing dollars but donating prizes.

United Fund Nearing One Third Of Goal

The United Fund drives advance with residential and business outreach ongoing in Sidney and at the Sioux Army Depot. Early gifts total $2,500, with about $1,500 more expected. business returns push the fund to $4,500, about 30 percent of the $15,500 goal. Dr. D. J. Apodoca Receives 12 Year Reformatory Sentence

Joe Apodoca aged 18 was sentenced by District Judge John H. Kuns to one to two years in the Nebraska State Reformatory at Lincoln for breaking and entering and malicious destruction of property. Concurrent terms follow for the Telegraph Printing Co. break in on Sept 3. Damages are about 400 dollars. Officers used tear gas before entering. Apodoca gave no explanation.

Potter boy escapes rattlesnake bite with cat claws

Three year old Tommy Johnson of Potter appeared bitten when a rattlesnake lurked by his doorway. His cat's claws left marks mistaken for fangs, prompting his mother Mrs Wendell Johnson to rush him to Potter and then to Sidney by highway patrol.

Emergency ride to Sidney ends safely for Johnson family

Mrs. Johnson rushed her children on a perilous trip to Sidney after a doctor urged speed. Trooper Felix Koenig met them west of Potter to finish the journey while Sidney Police cleared the way. Tommy avoided a snake bite. only a tetanus shot was needed. The Johnson farm near Potter returns to calm as officers, a panicked cat, and prompt responders receive praise.

P. J. Heaton Sr to preside at the Nebraska Democratic party convention to be held this Saturday in Omaha. Heaton, a longtime Democrat, will oversee the meeting as local officers are named while he continues a busy week in eastern Nebraska.

Redistricting To Be Prime WMCC Topic In Meeting Thursday

Western Nebraska United Chamber members plan a Thursday meeting at Fort Sidney Motor Hotel to discuss a constitutional amendment weighting area and population in future redistricting. WMCC president C C Worden will urge backing after the Nebraska Supreme Court rejected removing the amendment from November ballots. John Elwell Jr. serves as vice president. Sioux United Fund Drive Started at Sioux Depot

The Sioux Army Depot launched its United Fund drive with 36 solicitors beginning work to finish by October 2, aligning with Sidney's drive. Last year the depot raised $1,298.68. organizers aim to surpass that. Centered under the federal fundraising committee, Ira Johnson leads, with Keith Morris and Bill Faragher on the team.

Oil Engineers To Meet Here Thursday

Sidney will host the Colorado Nebraska subsection of the Society of Petroleum Engineers Thursday night at a dinner meeting in the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Principal speaker is Fred H. Poetmann manager of the Engineering and Chemistry Dept Denver Research Center for Marathon Oil Co. His topic is A Review and Appraisal of the In Situ Method of Oil Recovery. H N Rhoades directs local arrangements and expects about 35 representatives from Western Nebraska and Northeastern Colorado.
