Safflower fields faced some damage and harvest slowed, yet heavy combining is expected soon if rain stays away. The Pacific Vegetable Oil Co. safflower mill projects near completion of storage facilities by week’s end. Also, Nebraska reports good rains aiding corn and sorghum with topsoil moisture satisfactory in the western third. corn has largely advanced to the dent stage with a small portion mature and the 1958 crop ahead of 1957.

Warm dry weather aided sorghum and pastures though several weeks of frost-free days remain essential. Third cutting of alfalfa is 90 percent complete with about 10 percent of the fourth cutting done. Bean harvest progresses with variable yields due to blight. Roughly 20 percent of fall what acreage seeded, mainly in the Panhandle and northeast. FBI Steps In On Auto Theft Case Involving Roderek
Federal authorities took custody of Joseph Paul Roderek 20 of Spokane Washington from Cheyenne County jail on a car theft probe. He was arraigned in Omaha on interstate transport of a stolen vehicle from Sauk Rapids Minnesota to Sidney with a 3000 dollar bond. Roderek linked to multiple auto thefts and described an accident with two girls killed where he claimed to escape with minor injuries and jumped a 3000 dollar bond.
