In eastern Nebraska during the 1900s orchardists learned wind shelter and bloom timing protect fruit. Shelter belts on south and east, north wind breaks, and staged pruning reduce frost and early bloom risk. Examples include the David Hunter branch and Ed Scriven orchard near Mitchell with two-row belts and bluff protection.
