Steam Plant Is To Get Work Improvements to the Sidney steam generating plant were approved by the city council Friday night.
Vern Livingston, manager of the utilities, advised the board with engineer Robert Fulton of Lincoln on converting from coal to bunker fuel oil for boilers. He said current heating is wasteful and new gear will save about $2,000 yearly, paying for itself in about three years. Estimated total cost for storage tank and oil burners is $6,477. He blamed inefficient stokers for coal waste and said oil burners would ease firing and ash removal, aiming to have the new facilities ready for next heating season. The power board studies steam rates to curb annual deficits, with a potential rate hike to help downtown patrons.
