Cheyenne County and surrounding western Nebraska panhandle areas conclude a record wheat harvest. Heavy rainfall delayed combine usage, yet overall yield is described as outstanding with large shipments and storage continuing. Farmers prepare winter wheat and expect next season to surpass this year’s production.
Burling ton real estate agent M. A. Shipman reports growing activity in a city west side lot sale. New buyers have selected and purchased lots for homes, with remaining plots offered at low prices in an attractive city section as advertised on page two.
Potter course hosts a friendly golf match with Potter players outplaying their opponents. N. S. Miller parred the course, a feat never before achieved, with 18 holes in 71 and a course record of 34 for nine. Notable scores include Miller 71, Walker 100, Biggs 73, Johnson 98, James 103, Cords 90, Larson 983, Babcock 79, Wansen 41, Ray 48, and Bing 1. Gurley competitors posted scores such as Faith 76, Ellington 87, Wookey 87, Dirks 102, Bartel 90.
William Wgndliffe of Julesburg was electrocuted Wednesday afternoon when his body touched live wires while working on a big transformer a mile west of Julesburg. It is thought he slipped and contacted the wire, killing him instantly. Hulbert Beichett witnessed the fall, stopped, and moved him to Julesburg for medical care, but all efforts to revive him failed.
Mrs Susan Rush and Mrs C C Rush returned from Rapid City South Dakota after visiting their old homes. In Rapid City Mrs Rush attended a luncheon eon at the Rapid City Country club hosted by the Fortnightly club in honor of Mrs Coolidge and Mrs Peter Norbeck. She notes the First Lady's warm reception and popularity among local residents.
About 40 000 dollars is disbursed to 1 500 Nebraska National Guard members as two weeks training pay at the annual camp in August. Each man receives 24 dollars per day for duty at the camp. The average payment per man is 262 dollars. Half the funds come from the state regular fund and half from the federal government.
Sidney Parent Teachers Association officers announce a reception for Sidney school teachers at the high school gymnasium Wednesday evening September 21 at eight o clock. The public is invited to attend as part of a pleasant school year event featuring a brief program and refreshments.
Sheriff J. M. Nelson left Sunday for Lincoln with a prisoner bound for the state penitentiary and returned another man pending wife desertion charges. The inmate, Wm. Ef. Burke, was jailed on a felony count, pleaded guilty, and received a one to two year sentence.
Preparations proceed for the Cheyenne county fair on the fair grounds west of the city the last three days in September. Committees report progress on grand stand exhibits building and track preparation with a top tier program planned. Concessions premium catalog and entertainment entries are under way with new attractions expected to draw large crowds.
Western farmers prepare to harvest a large beet crop with vast labor in fields and factories. The Great Western Sugar company plans to refine about 32 million dollars worth of sugar from 301,009 tons of beets across 21 factories in Colorado Nebraska Wyoming and Montana. Harvest begins September 13 with multiple plants phased in by late September and limits lift October 8. Last year the company produced over half of all sugar from American grown crops.
Mrs. Mary Margaret Stevens author of Editor Herbert Stevens of the Potter Review died Friday morning September 9 at eight o clock after several months illness. A long time Potter resident she was born in Ohio September 25 188 and moved to Potter where she became a leading local figure. Funeral held at Potter M E church with Rev. Bing officiating and burial at Potter cemetery. Family and community extend sympathy.
Dalton Co operative plans a new fire proof hardware building to house its hardware department. Construction will start soon and the facility is expected ready for occupancy by the time the snow flies in the fall.
Henry Anderson of Sidney visited Lodge Pole for the Oil Settlers reunion. He traveled by covered wagon on April 11, 1885, to Lodge Pole then moved to a homestead ten miles west of Sidney where he resides.
Voters in Big Springs approved the sale of the municipal electric plant to Public Service Company in a special election held Tuesday of last week. The plant and franchise sold for 14 200 dollars, with the buyer to invest 10 000 dollars in improvements.
Congressman Robert G. Simmons and his family arrived at Scottsbluff from California where they had stayed for weeks due to Mrs. Simmons illness. They plan to remain until near December term of Congress. Mrs. Simmons is improving but not fully recovered.
Weather over the past ten days favored crops across western Nebraska panhandle counties. The corn harvest is expected to be one of the largest and most profitable, following a late spring start but strong progress in the last two months. Corn, second only to wheat in acreage and value, boosts hog farming profits and supports seed corn growth for Cheyenne county markets and export interest.
Two bandits Meeks and Barker were killed during a Wichita Nations bank vault raid. An officer and Meeks died in the battle. Barker fled to an abandoned house and was killed after refusing to surrender. Police linked them to the gang of R. D. Snodgrays, who killed Deputy Sheriff Osborne at Pine Bluffs.
F P. R. Forrest, general foreman for the Norfolk & Western railroad, based in Cluefield West Virginia, spent a few days in Sidney revisiting childhood scenes and old friends. He was a boy here 44 years ago, the son of Mr and Mrs Dick Forrest, early local settlers, and notes many changes in the march of progress in the Sidney area.
People of Potter mourn the death of Mrs Dolly Cave of Chappell who died suddenly in Edgemont SD while visiting her daughter Mrs Bernard Slocumb. Known for Royal Neighbor work she was past district deputy and organized the local camp. Burial expected in Chappell.
Sidney Chief J. J. Wait and Watchman Fred Frohm recovered a Ford roadster stolen from Kimball County. The car belonged to KH. J. Davis of Sidney. A Kimball sheriff notified via late Saturday call and the force trailed a matching vehicle, overtaking the thief just outside the city limits. The suspect offered no resistance and the car was returned to its owner Sunday.
The State Guaranty Fund Commission closed two western Nebraska banks and placed them in receivership. Depositors must file proof of claims for court ordered payment. North Platte’s Platte Valley Bank, with about 3000,000 in deposits, is overseen by receiver IT. A. Kirk of Gibbon. Bridgeport Bank, $490,000 in deposits, will be handled by receiver H. C. Peterson of Chappell.
R T Routt Colorado wrestler with many mat victories challenges Roy Chick of Cheyenne County to a bout. Local matrans plan the match as part of the Cheyenne County fair entertainment with Fred Mauser and C F Chick organizing arrangements. An official acceptance will be sent this week.
The Dalton Delegate notes a bridge over the irrigation ditch between Pinston and Bridgeport remains in poor condition. Two people were injured this week one woman with a broken nose and a man with a head gash as a car mounted the approach and passengers were tossed about in the back seat.
