Sidney Postmaster Ferris Preble announces a temporary postal rate cut effective Sunday. First class letters drop to 10 cents for the first ounce and 9 cents for each additional ounce, post cards fall to 7 cents, while airmail remains unchanged and third class rises slightly. The change lasts until after year start due to a delayed national rate approval.
Local businessman Bill Moore of High Plains Enterprises says talk of a third Sidney interchange on Interstate 80 is hurting West Interchange development. He notes firms paused talks for a West site until the South Interchange dispute is resolved, delaying progress by about a year. County Commissioner Ed Narjes City Councilman Ed Bauman and J W Waugh back adding ramps to the Highway 19 bridge to improve tourist access to Sidney businesses.
Wheat Belt Public Power District reports a successful peak load reduction through irrigation load control. By coordinating with farmers and Nebraska extension staff, they reduced August peak to 34 781 KW from an estimated 42 000 KW, saving customers over 70 000 this year and enabling continued irrigation service.

The First United Methodist Church in Sidney gains board approval to sponsor a Cambodian or Vietnamese refugee family. A public meeting is set for Sept 22 at the Sidney Public Library to outline plans and invite community involvement, with housing, basic needs, and first month's rent provided.
The St Patrick's School Board approved a dress code change allowing female students to wear neat clean and appropriate clothing instead of the traditional blue gray and white uniform. Superintendent Duane Gross says reaction is very positive with few minor issues and discretionary guidance rests with the administration. The shift ends decades of uniform use which had evolved from blue attire to a gray skirt and blue coat.
