Liberated POW Mitchell Hopes Home Soon Says Getting There Heals
Master Sgt. Odie E. Mitchell, 28, repatriated at Freedom Village, told his wife in Sidney that there is nothing with him that getting home won’t cure. He expects to depart Tokyo by boat, reach the West Coast in ten to twelve days, and rejoin his wife after 34 months as a prisoner of Reds. Mitchell, a native of Edinburg, Texas, enlisted in 1942, served in the Pacific, and rose to Second Lieutenant before being captured. He married Marjorie Mitchell on November 1, 1947 in Colorado Springs.

K C Davis Victim No Inquest Set
The mutilated body of K C Davis a 46 year old employee at the Sioux Ordnance Depot was found on the west bound main track of the Union Pacific likely struck by a fast train. Cheyenne County Attorney Jack Knicely said no inquest will be held while authorities continue a broad probe. Davis formerly ran a cafe in Sidney and worked at the ordnance depot and Elks Club. The body was found near the coal chutes in the east Union Pacific yards. funeral arrangements are pending. Davis born Sept 27 1906 at Morrill Neb moved to Dalton in 1927 married Minnie Reel in 1928. survived by wife six children and several relatives.

Garbage not burnt is collected by the city truck. Fire risk rose during a wind storm when burning trash in receptacles led to fires.

Miss Julia Hajek Dies After Illness in Cheyenne County
Miss Julia Hajek 76 a long time Cheyenne County resident died Tuesday morning at a local hospital after a years long illness. She lived at home until about a year ago then moved to her sister Mrs Al Sutter’s home. A brother John Hajek of Sidney survives. Funeral arrangements were incomplete awaiting word from relatives.

Nebraska 30 group to press policy on highway routing
Representatives of the Nebraska U S 30 association will meet state highway officials in Lincoln to discuss a policy for locating the highway through municipalities. The issue originated at Kimball where construction plans would move the road along the town’s south edge. A Kimball hearing yielded no decision and a next meeting will decide on a uniform routing policy.

Four Hurt In Holiday Auto Accidents West Of Sidney
Three women from Des Moines were injured when a 1952 Mercury rolled over multiple times on U S 30 near Sidney. Dorothy Summers, 21, suffered a broken pelvis. her twin sisters Carolyn and Marilyn Hedgecock received minor injuries and were treated and released. Summers remained hospitalized after being ejected. A separate crash on Highway 30 west of Sidney injured Francis Mitchell, 25, who skidded into a barrow pit after trying to pass. Damage to his 1953 Ford pickup was about 475 dollars. A trailer tongue broke, causing two cars to damage a parked auto in Dalton. Another collision west of Sidney near Potter involved Helen Kleinert and Merlin Maas with modest damages to both cars.

Schools May Not Bid On State's Tract
The Sidney school district will likely not bid on the School Section Addition to Sidney as lots go on the block Monday September 14. A seven acre tract marked as a future school site is valued by the State Board at fifteen thousand dollars, or over two thousand per acre, and Supt. O J Weymouth says the district will not bid. Bids must be within ten percent of the appraised value. About seventy four lots are offered, with many landowners holding improvements on leased land. Mayor Jack H Lowe questions valuations and calls for minimal inconvenience and reasonable pricing in the sale.

Marshall Williams of Chicago, an employee at Fox Shine Parlor, is jailed in Cheyenne County on grand larceny and breaking and entering charges. He allegedly stole 45 dollars from Wallace White’s wallet, entered the shine parlor, and took money from the cash register before fleeing to Denver. Capt. Rezac alerted Cheyenne authorities. Break-ins Reported At Western Implement and IH Warehouse
Overnight thefts left a typewriter and cash taken from Western Implement Company while the International Harvester warehouse was ransacked for little of value. Both break-ins involved window entries. Police say no leads yet and that strangers likely committed the robberies.
