Southern Panhandle 4-H entrants win state fair prizes

Nebraska southern Panhandle 4-H members earned purple and blue ribbons at the State Fair. Teresa Johnson of Sidney won a purple in home environment for a luncheon set. Theresa Thummel of Kimball won a purple in category. Janelle Balfour of Sidney and Chris Lukassen of Kimball scored purples in various textile and clothing divisions. Lori Snyder and others earned blues in photography, safety, and decorating entries.

Northwestern Bell seeks $18.5 million rate hike in Nebraska

Northwestern Bell filed with the Public Service Commission for an about 18.5 million dollar rate increase, roughly 10.4 percent for Nebraska customers to earn a fair return. A hearing date is not set.

In Cheyenne and Deuel counties Nebraska added over six million cubic feet per day of capacity. Alcoil Oil completed a 2.1 million cubic feet per day well west of Lorenzo. Quest Oil reported 3 million cubic feet potential near Sidney. Alcoi tested a 1.3 million cubic feet well near Chappell. Beren Corp ongoing draws near Potter. Morrill County projects and a Keith County wildcat are planned. In Bartley a 10-year-old was killed in a hunting accident, ruled accidental, parents farm nearby.

Old Settlers reunion draws thousands over Labor Day weekend

The Labor Day weekend drew thousands to the Lodgepole site for the Old Settlers reunion. Sidney High and St. Pat’s lost opening football games while a writer’s workshop and parent workshop were announced for Sidney events. The Ben Trumps of Sidney will visit the Lions at a fairgrounds event.

Sidney pledges rise to 1054 for Muscular Dystrophy telethon

Sidney residents pledged 1054 to the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy. Mrs. Don Born, pledge center coordinator, reported a near ten percent increase from 1976. The nationwide telethon raised 26841490 in pledges, supporting research into causes and cures. Seven ESA volunteers handled three telephones at Mrs. Born's home.

Potter Days Weekend Finalized With Parades Air Show And Dance

Potter Days in western Cheyenne County features a Friday night queen crowning and a Saturday parade dedicated to Ed Cole plus an air show with Rick Bastian. A free Saturday barbecue, a 1 p.m. band concert, and races accompany exhibits at several venues. The football game hosts Melbeta Friday at 7 30 with Thunderbird for the post game dance.

Oliver Dam project funding approved by SPNRD board

The South Platte NRD directors approved an 808 500 dollar grant request from the Nebraska Resources Development Fund for the Oliver Recreation Project west of Kimball. The package includes 117 000 in local contributions 300 000 from Game and Parks and 206 856 from RC&D funds. They plan to seek additional federal aid later via the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation.
