Five people died on Nebraska highways during the last Labor Day weekend. The Patrol will use all available manpower to address the surge in incidents and improve road safety.
Most Sidney residents plan a quiet Labor Day with many businesses closed and trips away. Lodgepole hosts the traditional weekend festival while Sidney offers entertainment at the high school auditorium and a 2 30 p.m. Road Show at the VFW.
The Sidney board of education plans a Tuesday night discussion on a proposed bond election in October. Three options include a new senior high with 4th to 6th grades moved there, costing over 44 million, remodeling North and South elementary schools at about 2.9 million, and reorganizing elementaries with high school remodels totaling about 24 million. A 2.5 million bond would require roughly 10 mills or 10 dollars more per thousand in assessed value for 20 years. Immediate safety repairs costing 200k to 225k may be needed regardless of approval, funded from the operating budget if no bond passes.
Loomis W Booth 48 of Lodgepole was hospitalized in stable condition after his 1968 Dodge wagon collided with a semi tanker at the Cheyenne Pipeline terminal 2.1 miles east of Sidney. The truck driver Ronny Ray Morse 22 of Grand Island pulled Booth from the wreck as the tanker turned onto US 30. The tanker had diesel fuel on board but no spill occurred. The station wagon was a total loss with $450 damage while the tanker sustained about $500 damage. Charges may be filed.

Five pilots from Nebraska and Potter reenact early airmail flights in Sidney to mark 50 years of civilian airmail. The group includes Bill Heilig Virg Adle Bud Gatherless Leonard Nelson and John Clinch. They chronicled wartime service and aircraft from the era and toured via Sidney North Platte and Cheyenne routes. The event featured the Emeraude and a Cessna, flight lore, and lunch with local officials.
National Weather Service calls Anita a dangerous hurricane as it lashes northeastern Mexico with 15 foot tides and heavy rain raising flash flood risk. Evacuations were ordered for fishing villages near La Pesca Las Guayavas El Charco Largo and Soto La Marina. Leopoldo Aragon a Panamanian critic of the canal treaty died after self immolation at Karolinaka Hospital following burns on most of his body.
South Platte NRD board to adopt a resolution submitting the Oliver Recreation Project to the Nebraska Resources Development Fund at its 7:30 p.m. meeting in the new 1840 Illinois headquarters. The session will review land appraisal and acquisition, project cost estimated at 1.6 million funded by Save the Lake donations over 118 000 state and federal recreation funds, plus other agenda items.
Great Western Sugar Co, the nation’s largest beet processor, will open plants Oct 1 in Montana and Wyoming with processing to begin Oct 8 in Colorado, Nebraska and Kansas. Beet intake targets up to 196 000 acres, down 22 percent from last year, amid hail damage and low prices squeezing profitability.
Sidney’s United Way appeal for 1977 78 begins with a September 6 mailing to over 150 advance gifts, aiming for a 15 650 target across eleven agencies including Kings Daughters Lodgepole Valley 4 H Youth Camp and the Tri County Association for Retarded Citizens with a goal to finish within a month.
