The city ordinance took effect Tuesday allowing idle cars to be parked mid street. Cars on opposite sides narrow the passage, forcing drivers to stay on the right, reducing pedestrian activity and raising concerns about exercise and safety.
Balance on hand is 40.40 with 14.50 subscribed but unpaid. Any committee claims should be presented to C. W. West. The cash balance remains under the committee and subject to City Council order. Volunteers are urged to assemble comfort kits for soldiers as they entrain for encampment. This week 29 kits remain for the next shipment, with donors asked to fill a full bag of about two dollars or join forces to complete one. Contact Mrs. W. P. Miles, Kit Committee chair, for details.
Mr and Mrs M M Herbert left Wednesday morning to attend the state fair at Lincoln Onyx Hosiery at Hinks Boot Shop.
Four white men from Cheyenne County Nebraska are named as principals for the first quota to be called for service at Camp Funston and Fort Riley Kansas. Alternates are listed with their hometowns including Sidney Lodgepole and Gurley. All must report when called and carry official identification cards issued by the Nebraska governor's office.
The United States Navy appeals for men who can cook to join the service in the Nebraska and South Dakota district. Pay ranges from 35.50 to 66.50 monthly plus clothing food rent and medical care. Living expenses are effectively about 50 monthly in civilian terms. Eligible applicants should visit local Navy Stations in Omaha Sioux Falls Aberdeen Watertown Lead Hastings Lincoln Sioux City Norfolk Council Bluffs for exams with free transit between stations and final destinations.
Miss Mary Rezanina is spending the week at Highland ranch visiting with her friend Miss Laura Herbert. Miss Edith Oldershaw left last Friday for Palmer, Nebraska, to begin teaching work. A. E. Phelps and wife hosted this week the sister of Mrs. Phelps, her husband, and Mr. Phelps' father, all from Denver.
County Superintendent Miss Mc Fadden has been on enforced vacation early in the week due to eye trouble. She was back in the office yesterday and resumed duties.
Jack McGill shipped two car loads of goods and equipment to Carbon county Wyoming where he has taken a homestead in the Cheyenne county colony.
W. W. Fightmaster of York county spent the early week as a guest of T. C. Fightmaster while surveying the region for a possible relocation. The party looked over local tracts and noted several promising sites for settlement.
Mrs Charles Sandy and two sons and daughter from Ashland Nebraska visited last week with sister in law Mrs F Anthony and family. They joined Mr Anthony and family on an outing west of Cheyenne Wyoming near Crystal Lake and the mountains.
Dr. B W Frazey departed Saturday night to take charge of the expansive Cheyenne ranch owned by a local family. The move shifts medical duties away from the town and places Frazey at the helm of a major regional operation.
Labor Day picnic last Monday at Kreuger's Lake drew a large crowd as Trade Craftsmen organized the event with J W Walker Joseph L Damet J D Pickett Sam Sweet Tom Valentine and T J Jones and Sam Skipp supervising grounds. Mayor Uptegrove opened the program with W P Miles delivering a patriotic address. A six piece orchestra provided music while a ball game between carpenters and laborers ended with the laborers victorious. Prizes included hardware items silk hose and cash, with half proceeds for the Red Cross after auditing.
All women 16 and older in Cheyenne County are urged to register on September 12 in every county schoolhouse. The State Superintendent of Schools, per a Nebraska governor request, has set September 12 afternoon as a half holiday for schools to host registration booths with a qualified woman as clerk. Each registrant pledges to perform some country service, at home or abroad, possibly one hour weekly or more, and may indicate willingness to learn or work elsewhere. A large crowd bid farewell Wednesday night to four soldiers departing on No. 4 for Des Moines. Joe Simodynes, Llewellyn Martin, Clarence Perry, and Francis De Brunner from Lodgepole carried comfort kits and gifts from friends. They traveled light, kept in good spirits, and the town prayed for their safe return to active service.
Robert Lee Scearce of Denver and Bessie L. Leonard of Breckenridge Colo were married on September 5 by County Judge Chambers in a simple ceremony.
Edward Burkhart and Dorothy McGervin both of Merino Colorado were married on the first day of this month in a local ceremony. The couple, linked by Merino ties, exchanged vows as residents unite in a simple marriage notice.
The Methodist Church crowd filled the building for the last meeting day on its present site with Reverend L E Lewis recounting its history. Mrs Ahrens Mrs Evans of Cheyenne and Evangelist Tage sang solos. a noon meal followed the morning service. An afternoon experience meeting featured about a dozen speakers before plans to move the church and begin brick work ahead of snow.
A son was born to Mr and Mrs Harry Witters on September 7th.
Maynard W. Osborn spent a couple of days this week on a business mission to Denver, reflecting on regional markets and potential partnerships. He met with local executives to discuss expansion, trade, and investment opportunities.
