Construction rate climbs in Sidney as permits rise this year

Sidney reports August building permits totaling 103164 with big growth over last year. Key projects include a 73500 home at 2308 Linden St and 20144 for garages and sheds plus 5000 remodeling at the Elks Club. Year to date totals reach 589888 with overall activity up 160000 for the year.

Astronaut Overmeyer to Speak at I-80 Dedication in Sidney

NASA astronaut Robert F. Overmeyer, Marine Corps lieutenant colonel, will join Transportation Day events on October 19 in Sidney to mark the opening of Interstate 80's final Nebraska segment. The Ohio native holds a BS in physics from Baldwin Wallace, an MS in aeronautics from the Naval Postgraduate School, and was selected for NASA's manned orbital program after Edwards AFB training in 1966. The celebration features transportation exhibits and other activities surrounding the highway opening.

Big Red Fever in Western Outlook on NU football

Junked car timetable confirmed for Panhandle crush

The Panhandle Resource Council says cleanup of junked cars will start in about three weeks with M & M Wrecking Co. moving from the Nebraska Wyoming line east toward Lewellen then south to Highway 30. Communities with 25 or more cars may join. Funds from the project aid Lodgepole Valley Youth Camp dining and recreation lodge, with 4-H Council efforts targeting $15,000 of a $45,000 lodge cost.

Hospital Auxiliary marks 20th birthday

The Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary celebrates two decades of service by raising funds for equipment and scholarships. Since inception it has donated over 42000 to hospital projects and nursing scholarships, funding items from bed rails to a portable difibrillator, while sponsoring a Junior Auxiliary candystriper program and hosting a yearly bazaar with food and craft booths. The 20th anniversary year includes a Sept 19 20 bazaar at the Sidney Ellis Building with support from local groups.

Cole to head United Fund in $13,000 drive

Sidney area United Fund sets a 1974 goal of 13000 with ten beneficiaries including Guiding Star Council Girl Scouts Red Cross and Salvation Army. Ed Cole to lead the drive with Jack Lowe heading advance gifts and three phases planned Advance gifts business and neighborhood drives target at least one third of the goal and local groups fare better than regional or national ones. The 1973 drive raised just over 12000 and several requests were reduced to fit the new target while the Day Care Center did not seek funds due to federal support.

Sidney area reports near normal rainfall despite statewide drought

Cheyenne County Nebraska measurements show a near normal year for moisture at the High Plains Agricultural Lab six miles north of Sidney with 10.27 inches from January through August, up from last year’s 9.17. August alone totaled 3.15 inches, while unofficial Scottsbluff figures cite 3.09 inches for Sidney in August. Weather Service notes August 1973 rainfall was 1.08 inches below normal for Sidney, with 0.74 inches last August. Local officials say drought relief exists in context of statewide rainfall, though late-season rains hurt crop timing, especially corn.

Sidney Council mulls League plan to update city code

The Sidney City Council heard a League of Nebraska Municipalities plan to update the city's code book to align with new city ordinances state statutes and court decisions. Inflation Up and Sales Down in May in Local Region

May retail sales in Cheyenne Kimball Devel county region rose 18.6 percent from a year earlier before adjusting for inflation. After price adjustments, Sidney shows a 7.3 percent real drop, with smaller declines in banking activity and power use. May building permits plunged 65.3 percent. For January–May 1974 unadjusted tri county sales run 27.7 percent ahead of 1973. Bureau notes drought may worsen impact.

Campbell named Nebraska education commissioner in unanimous vote

Dr. Anne Campbell was chosen by the State Board of Education to succeed Cecil E. Stanley as Nebraska commissioner of education on Dec. 1 after a six month search. She 56, has led NU public affairs since 1972 and was once considered for an HEW education post. Campbell is from Alamosa Colorado and holds degrees from Northern Colorado Wayne State College and UNL. She taught in Battle Creek and was Madison County school superintendent in 1955.
