Panhandle forecast shows warm, unsettled weekend outlook

The Panhandle forecast calls for fair conditions this afternoon and tonight with highs in the 90s and lows around 60. Saturday brings partly cloudy skies and a 10 percent rain chance with highs near 90. Sunday and Monday favor partly cloudy skies with scattered thundershowers, highs 85 to 90 and lows 55 to 60.

CAA Head Loses Job After Audit Findings

Kimball Lee Soto, director of the Panhandle Community Action Agency, was fired by the CAA board 16 to 2 with 3 abstentions after an audit reported 1183.43 missing funds and questionable travel per diem. Attorney Donn Raymond cited insufficient records, possible duplicated reimbursements, excessive per diems, and possible personal expenses charged to the agency.

Early Days Of Air Mail Will Be Celebrated

A commemoration of the early air mail flying days is set for next Tuesday Sept 8. Sidney will host a flight from North Platte and Cheyenne to Sidney and back with arrivals around noon. Postmaster Ferris Preble and Chamber of Commerce officials will greet arrivals, and a luncheon at noon or soon after will mark the event for $2 with reservations due by 9 am. The Silver Wings, veterans of air service, lead the commemoration flight.

Four year soil pollution study begun at High Plains lab

The High Plains Agricultural Laboratory starts a four year experiment to determine how long herbicides last in soil. Two thousand eight hundred jars with 10 products are buried in seven trenches at 6, 16, and 36 inches and will be excavated for testing at 2, 4, 6 months and 1 to 4 years. Agronomist C. R. Payroll Strength Grows in Cheyenne County Sidney Area

The Sidney Telegraph survey shows public and private payrolls sustain hundreds of jobs in Cheyenne County. Major employers include the public schools, Memorial Hospital, the City of Sidney, Union Pacific, Northwestern Bell with AT&T and Western Electric, Wheat Belt Public Power District, The Egging Co. at Gurley, J&M Trucking, and local school districts in Dalton Gurley Potter and Lodgepole. Nebraska wheat farmers report a 38 bushel state average yield with high quality across varieties. Fugitive Held on Parole Violations From Two States

John Q. Parker Jr. 24 of Latta South Carolina is jailed in Kimball County after arrest by State Trooper Richard Larsen. Parker is wanted by South Carolina parole authorities in Columbia for felonious assault and by a Gainesville Georgia sheriff for breaking and entering. A female passenger escaped detention.

Potter Days Draws Near With Old Fashioned Town Festivities

Potter prepares for a two day Potter Days celebration on Sept 11 and 12 with a Good Old Days theme. Events include a football classic, parade, horseshoe tournament, foot races, pie eating, softball throws, barbecue, bicycle races, and a full array of exhibits with cash prizes. The 46th annual Old Settlers Reunion in Lodgepole marked Nebraska’s notable celebration with a 10 am parade and a packed afternoon program led by master of ceremonies Wilfred Kreider. Highlights included musical numbers, the king and queen presentation by A C Peterson, races, a parade prizes, and an evening dance with The Playboys. S.E. Dalton Festival features two parades and events

The 43rd Dalton Fall Festival schedule lists two parades on Wednesday September 8 and 9, a morning 1030 parade and an 8 oclock night parade plus contests, rides, exhibits and flower shows. Floats must be registered by Tuesday 5 pm and judging starts Tuesday evening.

Cremation For Wreck Victim

The body of Mrs. Steven Phyllis Fox age 25 of Detroit was taken to Denver for cremation. Her ashes will go to her mother in Beverly Massachusetts. Mrs Fox died from injuries in a head on collision west of town on Wednesday morning. Four other persons were hospitalized.
