Point System For Ducks Affects Panhandle Hunters

A new point based duck hunting system in western Nebraska sets a 90 day season from Oct 10 to Jan 7 and assigns point values to species. Drake mallards are 20 points, hen mallards 9 points, and other ducks range from 10 to 100 points. Hunters must manage daily bag limits to stay under 100 points. A special teal season runs Sept 12 to 20 with a four per day limit.

Fatal head-on crash on U.S.30 near Sidney claims Detroit woman

A 25-year-old Detroit woman, Phyllis Fox, is dead and four others hospitalized after a head-on collision on U.S.30 about a mile west of Sidney Tuesday. The Fox car, eastbound, veered onto the shoulder then crossed into westbound lanes, colliding with a second vehicle carrying the Bradburds of Red Bluff, California. Survivors include her husband Steven Fox and others from Detroit and California. The crash required a prying tool to open a vehicle door and involved extensive injuries, with Fox transported to Denver for treatment before her death.

More Retirees Mean Substantial Income To Cheyenne County

Governor Norbert Tiemann appoints five Sidney residents to a listening panel for the Senior Citizens Community Forum to be held September 9 at the Ft. Sidney Motor Hotel. Sidney High School faces uncertain Class A or B status this year

With a final count pending this Friday, Sidney High School hangs between Class B and Class A. The 9 through 12 grade boy count rose to 316, six more than last year, while rival Gering and Alliance shifts may push Sidney either way. If Alliance declines or Gering gains, Sidney could top Class B or slip back to Class A, risking different competition and fewer trophies.

ASC Vote Deadline Sept 11 in Cheyenne County

The Sidney police investigated two accidents on Tuesday with no injuries. A Gager Cupertino driver hit a Benzel Potter auto for about 275 in damage. Lowrey Beatrice driver ran a red light and was cited for DUI. Farmers will vote for ASC committeemen by Sept 11, with ballots mailed now across nine county communities. Ballots use a secret ballot with dual envelopes to protect voters. Votes counted Sept 15 at 10 a.m. Eligible voters include farm owners or tenants involved in ASCS programs. If not received by Sept 5, contact the county ASC office.

Weather outlook for the Panhandle expects generally fair conditions this afternoon tonight and Thursday with highs in the 80s and near 90 and a low around 50.
