Robbery charges filed in Brownson incident

Four men from Sterling Colorado face three counts of robbery two counts of felonious assault and one count of malicious destruction of property in Cheyenne County Court. The arrests follow an early Sunday home invasion at Grothe’s Brownson rental where victims were bound assaulted and valuables taken. Suspects named are Chris L Carpenter Mark Sobott Theodore Sobott and Roger Haller with warrants issued.

Two Die in Labor Day One Car Crash East of Sidney

A one car crash on US Highway 30 overpass near Sidney killed Rocky E Anderson and Arthur W Ferguson and seriously injured Donald Olivertus. The 1966 Oldsmobile left its lane, struck a guard rail, and toppled to the ground below. Anderson and Ferguson died at hospital. Olivertus remained in serious but stable condition. Ferguson drove for Ernest Watson Line. Olivertus’s role unclear. The crash follows another fatal site accident nearby days earlier.

Neb. hearings planned on Bicentennial sculptures

A legislative subcommittee will hold public hearings across Nebraska on the Bicentennial sculpture projects to determine whether the works are gifts and must be accepted as state property. The hearings aim to gather citizen input and to advise on necessary gift acceptance procedures.

The Sidney Telegraph increases home delivery prices by 2 percent as of Oct. 1 with annual rate at 16 dollars six months nine dollars and three months five dollars. Carriers share in the rise and the circulation department offers an 8 p m calling service at 254-5558 for late deliveries.

Flag and citation presented at Lodgepole Old Settlers event

State Bicentennial director Donald Searcy presented the Bicentennial flag and a citation to Lodgepole Mayor Clarence Kripal during Monday festivities tied to the 51st Old Settlers Reunion. Searcy praised Lodgepole as Cheyenne County’s first Bicentennial Community and urged reflection on 200 years of United States history.

NRD Accepts Takeover of Local Water System

South Platte NRD board approves transfer to NRD for operation and maintenance of the water system east of the Western Nebraska Technical College campus. An engineering study will determine water availability, a rate schedule, and maintenance costs. The district may host SB 577 informational meetings in Sidney Kimball and Chappell in September.

Cooler air spreads across Nebraska ending a spell of high heat. In Ralston five schools dismissed early as classrooms reached above 100 degrees. Omaha Millard and Bellevue districts stayed open with regular schedules.

Export plan would give farmers market muscle

Far-Mar-Co Inc announced PRO-MARK a plan to pool wheat for pre harvest sale, allowing 250000 farmers to market directly to domestic buyers and foreign nations. George Voth said the system moves wheat from combine to consumer, boosting farmer access to markets and long term gains.

Old Settlers weekend lights Lodgepole with parades and pageantry

The 51st Old Settlers Reunion in Lodgepole over Labor Day weekend featured motor bike races a pie eating contest watermelon feed and many contests at the Depot Museum and Senior Citizen Center. Monday opened with a parade led by the American Legion Color Guard followed by school bands and a Kiddies Parade with winners in multiple divisions. The Lions Club barbecue served 1000 plus attendees while about 300 visited the museum. The event included a horse pulling contest gymkana horseshoe tournament and a concluding Legion Hall dance.
