Lightning Ignites Banner County Range Fire Near Potter

A range fire in Wilson Ranch, Banner County, sparked by lightning burned rugged canyon terrain for about six hours. Estimated to cover 1000 to 2500 acres, no injuries occurred and only grasslands were damaged. Fire units from Bridgeport, Dalton, Gurley and Potter fought gusty winds, with crews later kept on watch for flareups.

Plans for Armed Forces Caravan stop in Sidney

Oktoberfest weekend kicks off in Sidney with multi-site events

The first annual Oktoberfest in Sidney runs October 3 to 5 centered at Legion Park with downtown displays, Senior Center programs, and activities at Sidney Junior High. Enrollment in Sidney Public Schools Down by 80

Superintendent Russell Pedersen reports Sidney Public Schools enroll about 1,560 students, down 80 from last year. The breakdown shows North Elementary 255, South 306, Central 233, junior high 382, and high school 384, with fall counts expected to rise after Labor Day as some registered students have not yet enrolled.

Rainfall Sweeps Eastern Nebraska with Hail and Winds

Eastern Nebraska saw heavy showers and scattered thunderstorms with hail and strong winds. BeHeype reported hail, nearly an inch of rain fell in south Omaha, and Sarpy County measured up to four inches in spots. A slow cold front should bring drier conditions by tomorrow morning with another round possible tonight. Temperatures included 86 in Chadron.

Clifford Sander of Lodgepole, a Cheyenne County grader patrol officer, built a solar furnace atop his garage using aluminum reflectors to focus sun heat. He claims it could cut heating bills by half, maintains rock temperatures at 250 to 300 degrees, and plans a patent after spending 450 to 500 dollars.
