The Dalton Gurley Rural Fire Department received a Chevrolet fire truck manufactured by Howe, delivered from Indiana and arriving a day late. After a demonstration in Dalton the unit was thoroughly tested in Omaha and is expected to aid both communities.
R. W. Patterson, area rent director of the Sidney Defense Rental Area, announced that effective Monday, September 9, the waiting period for tenants of purchased homes under OPA rent regulations will be extended from three to six months. Amendment No. 67, effective September 15, 1945, broadened the waiting period nationwide unless local areas proved three months adequate. Alliance, Sidney, and Dawes county areas had three months but escalating housing pressures require alignment with the six month rule, with veteran preference possible for some cases. Patterson urged maintaining tenancy stability during the housing crisis to curb inflation.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration aims to launch a half billion dollar national airport program within a month while avoiding conflicts with housing curbs. Sidney is promised airport ground title by year’s start, rules by October 1, and first formal applications soon after. Material shortages exist but labor and earth-moving needs predominate. piping is most scarce with substitutes in development. An October 1 deadline for the national airport survey is set.

The Cheyenne County Soil Conservation District formed a study committee at its first meeting to map a farmer aid program. Members Rex Carey Dalton George Harmon and county agents will study climate soil conditions with subgroups assigned to specific tasks for next meeting. Applicants are urged to file forms now with county agents. mailing addressed to the county agent’s office.
A Wednesday public meeting at the courthouse invites residents to discuss forming a Cheyenne County Agricultural Association to run the fair like Scotts Bluff. Over a hundred have already paid as original shareholders, with county commissioners and fair board members specially invited, but all are welcome.
Last week's cloudy damp weather broke Saturday morning with clear skies and higher temperatures. The period delivered about three-fourths of an inch of moisture to Sidney and vicinity, aiding fall wheat planting. Irrigators gained temporary relief from 24 hour schedules as rain soaked valley fields. Most irrigated crops look good and a large harvest is forecast if frost delays maturity.
Cheyenne County 4-H members compete at the State Fair with prize trips for top performers. Demonstrations include shoes care, sheep tick control, cattle grub management, and a wool suit style show. The group also features music identification, clothing judging, and livestock events. Exhibits from county fairs advance to the state event.
Governor Griswold signed all eight bills from the special session ending Thursday. The measures include raising old age and blind maximums to 50 a month, expanding eligibility for municipal and county hospital grants, and protecting benefits for health travel. Funds were appropriated for school lunch administration and veterans on the job training, with tuition limits on junior colleges removed and ballot printing rules adjusted for similar surnames.
Clarke Grieve defending champion won the feature match of the opening round in the country club championship golf tourney Sunday, defeating Dr. C. B. Dorwart on the eighteenth hole. Grieve led early, then Dorwart leveled at 15 and 16, Grieve rallied with a sensational 17th, parred 18, while Dorwart finished over par. Other results included Blip Doran vs Leo Shuman and Frank Gallagher vs Dr. George Taylor, with several matches pending.
Domestic workers from Texas and other southern states will be recruited to help with the sugar beet and late potato harvest in western and central Nebraska. About 60 000 acres of beets will be harvested, with 70 000 planted and 10 000 lost to frost. The 1946 beet crop is expected to average just over 12 tons per acre. About 2 000 outside workers will be needed for potato harvest starting around September 20.
Sidney Will open the 1946 football season against Alliance on September 13 under coach Leo Shuman. The opener was moved up from Sterling after polio concerns delayed Sterling’s start to September 16. The Maroons schedule includes nine home and away games with night contests beginning September 13, and fourteen lettermen aiming to replace last year’s standout quarterback Bud Downs.
A new REA district to operate from Sidney will cover seven counties and link lines from Dix to Garden County. The Wheat Belt Electric Membership Association plans to serve farms and small towns, starting with about 500 customers and expanding toward 2000 as power and materials permit. The district faces delays due to a public works halt and awaits a diesel plant, with a substation planned near Sidney to connect Sterling and the North Platte Valley. Local officials emphasize coordination with Fairbanks Morse for energy, and a slate of officers and an attorney have been named to govern the new organization.
The Chamber of Commerce will soon distribute an illustrated folder promoting Sidney and nearby areas. President John Martinosky said engravings copy and layout are approved and a printer handles the job. An initial order of 2500 folders will be printed with more to follow when paper is available. Banks in Nebraska have lent over 13 million dollars to G I veterans with 57 percent of banks making loans and 58 institutions closing ten or more loans. The mid August totals include Parma, business, home loans and real estate guarantees with farm and non real estate approvals across multiple categories. Inland Construction Co won the bid for paving curb and gutter and storm sewer in four new Sidney districts at about 164000 dollars, six thousand under the engineer’s estimate. Osage Street backers urged wider 56 foot streets, with the city considering a mix of 42 and 56 foot widths and gradual changes due to taxpayer costs and long term maintenance concerns.

Deputy County Attorney Farley Young announced that 19 year old Nicholas Camanche, a state reformatory trusty, admitted entering Mrs. Raymond E. Wright home and beating her with a club Thursday night. Camanche, committed to the prison in April last year from Sidney, had a three year sentence. Reformatory superintendent Harry Jesperson noted the youth’s record had been good.
