Carter Plans 20 Percent Wheat Set Aside With Flexibility

The Carter administration proposes a 20 percent wheat set aside with a flexible system allowing idle land from other crops to meet the target. 1978 wheat plantings are expected to drop to about 63.5 million acres, a 14.6 percent decline, while some farmers may maintain or increase wheat by idling different crops.

Reduction plan ties wheat support to set aside compliance

The plan cuts wheat acreage by 20 percent next year with income support payments covering at least 80 percent of planted wheat to bridge the price gap. Noncompliers lose price supports and disaster aid across crops, while 1978 target prices hover around 3.00 to 3.05 per bushel depending on crop size and pending loan levels. Deputy Agriculture Secretary John White says compliance is strongly urged.

An eight minute power failure hit Sidney at 21 40 Wednesday morning caused by an open switch at a Bureau of Reclamation substation northwest of Sidney. City plant operators activated two generators to restore service as the Bureau conduct switching was underway.

Nebraska Education Aid Petition Faces Attorney General Opinion

The Nebraska State Department of Education will seek an attorney general opinion on distributing state education aid if the petition drive succeeds. Backers say signatures are sufficient to place the issue on the 1978 general election ballot. A successful petition would suspend the $20 million aid increase until after the election.

Gas cost to raise in Nebraska towns

Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co says residential and commercial gas rates will rise in Sidney and 152 other Nebraska communities due to higher gas purchase costs. In Sidney and nine nearby towns the increase is 9.7 cents per thousand cubic feet, adding about 14 dollars per year to homeowners. Rate changes take effect Oct 1, with local City Council approval needed in Sidney. otherwise the company may refile or seek a general increase with FPC approval.

Hurricane Anita Threatens Texas Coast

The National Weather Service issued a hurricane watch for the Texas coast and western Louisiana as Anita, a first of the season storm with 90 mph winds, sits about 235 miles southwest of New Orleans and drifts westward. The Coast Guard placed six Texas stations on standby and urged evacuation for low lying areas. About 30,000 residents have already fled from storm paths.
