The forecast for Sidney calls for fair and warmer conditions this afternoon and tomorrow. Highs near 90, lows in the 50s, with rain chances near zero. Through Friday, temperatures average in the 90s with lows 55 to 65. Partly cloudy and warmer with a chance of afternoon and evening thundershowers.
The Sidney Telegraph published a story about drought ending in a dry August. An hour after press time, thunder and lightning accompanied light rainfall, the first in some time and greatly welcomed by local farmers and residents.
Readings in the 80s continued this week with a hint of autumn in the air. The weekend was pleasant with high clouds moderating temperatures as outdoor lovers crowded the area. The region needs moisture, but long range forecasts show little chance of rain.
Government agricultural experts report this winter wheat crop exceeds last year in protein content weight and moisture. The final report from the State Federal Division of Agricultural Statistics shows protein averaging 11.6 percent versus 11.3 last year, with test weight at 62.2 pounds per bushel up from 61, and moisture at 11.6 percent, slightly lower than last year.
Nine members of the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department traveled to Chadron Sunday for a fire school sponsored by the Nebraska State Fire Marshall. Deputy Fire Marshall Paul Thein led classes on chemical and gas methods of firefighting, with Sidney attendees Scott Fulton, F.M. Stone, Ole Weaver, Jim Overman, Dean Stettner, Jerry Van Natter, Leroy Drekkenson, Bruce Wright, and Charles Hawkins.
Lincoln Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co asks Nebraska Supreme Court to move up oral arguments in the Sidney gas rate case. The utility seeks a 24.89 percent increase while city approved 6.7 percent in 1968. Court action aims to avoid duplicative trials across 18 pending cases. Sidney City Attorney says no objection to advancing arguments.

A giant boat launch on Lake McConaughy built at Ogallala is described with engineering notes and flawless results. The Plains Rock and Mineral Club of Kimball will host the annual Rock and Mineral Show September 18 to 20 at the 4-H Building on High School Street. The event will feature at least 75 displays plus several dealers with specimens including moon rocks, rough and finished rocks, jewelry, and artifacts. Dealers from Colorado Kansas Nebraska and Wisconsin are expected.
Nebraska State Patrol logged two weekend accidents with no injuries. A deer struck car on Highway 385 north of Sidney injuring no one and causing about 300 dollars in damage to a car driven by Harry W Steffen of Scottsbluff. A Gurley area county road rollover by Leo J Wolff caused about 400 dollars damage to a southbound truck and spilled about 100 bushels of wheat. no injuries were reported.
Nebraska plans 8.8 miles of Interstate paving in 1970 71 but final opening to travelers will not occur until 1971 72. Several segments in western Nebraska near Oshkosh Chappell Bushnell and the Wyoming line are slated for completion by fall 1970 and late 1971 with mixed opening prospects due to access roads and connections. Nebraska will reach about 84.7 percent Interstate completion with additional segments under contract for late 1971 and 1972 openings.
Funeral services for William Horace Kinnersley 50 will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace Baptist Church Sidney with Rev. Paul Levin officiating. Kinnersley died Friday at Memorial Hospital after five days there. Born August 23 1920 in Dalton he lived in Cheyenne County most of his life except for seven years in military service. He was a V F W member. Survivors include three sons Donald William William H and Robert Lee of Yakima Wash four daughters Peggy Louise Ruth Alice Linda Lee Doyle of Portland and Judy June Murphy of Yakima two stepdaughters Bernice Stanfield Frances and Barbara Tenbush both of Sidney two brothers John and Albert of Sidney and two sisters Ethel Touney of Dupont Colo and Margaret McCulloch of Corning Calif He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Beverly. The family designates Grace Baptist Church for memorials. Gehrig Son Funeral Home in charge.
The Cheyenne County levy totals 8.30 mills on a $51 412 504 valuation. Sidney’s total levy is 91.60 mills with 23.30 city share. Lod gepole Dalton Potter Gurley town levies range 19.90 24.15 24.90 24.50 mills on varying valuations. Educational Unit 14 1.00 mill and county ambulance 0.40 mill. Sidney School District maintains a 2.0 mill sinking fund levy.
Lincoln reports a $1.6 million contract for the Sunol to Lodgepole segment of I-80 as the largest in the area for 1970-71. Bids were opened last Thursday, with I-80 activity continuing toward Chappell and Oregon-to-Kimball segments. The five year plan allocates hundreds of thousands to Kimball Cheyenne Deuel counties for grading, paving, lighting, and rest areas, aiming to complete I-80 across Nebraska by 1973 or 1974.
The Nebraska State Highway Department unveiled a 95.5 million dollars for 1971 to 1972, including 183 state and 38 interstate projects. Western districts will surface 231.3 miles of graveled roads, with major work on U.S. 20 385 U.S. 26 and U.S. 30 bridges and resurfacings, plus a five year plan of 243 million dollars for 1972 to 1976 aiming to leave under 68 miles of graveled roads.
