Fire destroys trailer near Sidney on Highway 30

An electrical short likely from a heater defrosting a refrigerator started a fire Tuesday afternoon destroying a two-trailer dwelling 1.5 miles east of Sidney on Highway 30. Owned by Ray Robinson and occupied by Merle Robinson, the units suffered total loss with no injuries. Firemen note this is the third trailer fire the department has responded to in recent months.

Sidney NCIP finalist as judges inspect program scrapbook

Nebraska Community Improvement Program officials planned an on the spot visit to Sidney today as the city competes in the NCIP finals for towns 5000 to 50000. Sidney, led by Kay Fix, advanced to the finals for a second year, trailing North Platte last year.

United Fund Total Reaches $13,291 Above Target

The United Fund reports a total of $13,291, surpassing the $13,000 goal by two percent. Secretary Barb Custer notes progress and urges workers who have unfinished tasks to complete them promptly and invites overlooked citizens to contribute at Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce headquarters or by calling 254-5851.

Pre election activity subdued in this area

Fluoridation school aid and several races for local regional and state offices will confront voters in the General Election Tuesday. Sidney approves shopping center plan and street access

Sidney City Council pledged help to develop a 76 acre shopping center south of Legion Park pending plans from Leo Eisenberg Co. The council also approved a $12,000 state crime grant for a youth counseling program with $600 local match and considered access routes via Toledo Street and Arlo Jones Addition. Separate actions included power, gas, water well bids, and a report on October weather and upcoming local elections.

Traffic lights to be reviewed in Sidney

The State Highway Commission will review Sidney traffic light timing after Interstate 80 reduced downtown traffic. The commission aims to improve flow and support local businesses. The no left turn at 10th Ave and Illinois St may also be reconsidered.
