Gurley switches to dial telephone system starting Thursday signaling a week long conversion. Customers will be notified when workers arrive for home service changes. The move marks a milestone for Gurley with headquarters at Mrs William Wolcott’s beauty shop.
Weather notes report a sharp cold snap with three inches of wet snow in Sidney and surrounding areas. Beets face a late harvest push as a hard freeze nears, while wheat fields gain moisture. roads stay cautious as slush clears by Saturday noon. Duck and goose hunters welcome the Canadian air mass bringing migrating birds and several kills.
John J. McFadden 58, longtime Sidney resident, died in a Denver hospital after a three week illness. He will be buried in Sidney after funeral services at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Born June 28, 1893, he was the son of Hugh and longtime community settlers. He was retired for several years and survived by five sisters: Grace and Rose of Sidney, Sadie McFadden, Julia Johnston, and Katherine Cameron of Berkeley California.
The Sidney Community Hotel Corp board seeks professional help to choose a site for the new hotel. They plan to host Myron D. Hockenbury of Harrisburg and several architects, plus a rep from American Hotels Corp., to discuss site selection, design, and operation. The 15 member board weighs downtown versus westward sites as pledges flow in.
Halloween revelers have a lively night planned with a midnight scare show at the Fox Theatre and free admission for bringing a black cat. The New Fox offers a twin bill The Sons of Dr Jekyll and The Tattooed Stranger at 11 30 p m while the VFW and American Legion Clubs host parties with live bands.
Sidney Council of Churchwomen World Community Day holds a Friday session at Trinity Lutheran Church starting at 2 PM followed by a tea. Principal speaker is J. Fred Thompson and soloist is Mrs. Lowry Lindell. Attendees asked to return duffel bags for a council charity.
Pvt. Richard Stevens, brother of Mrs. R. M. Franzen and Albert Stevens of near Sidney, was killed in Korea in October. He served with Company H, 28th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Armored Division, and is survived by his wife and mother, Mrs Pete Stevens, of Gothenburg.
Nebraska wheat leaders and growers flood Sidney Friday for the 1951 State Wheat Show at the City Auditorium. Attendees will view top Nebraska samples, inspect exhibits, and hear experts speak on wheat production and the impact of blights, with programs for both men and women led by J. C. Swinbank of the Nebraska Grain Improvement Association.
The Housing and Home Finance Agency authorizes a 200 home program in Cheyenne County to house defense workers. Seventy-five rental units will range from one to three or more bedrooms with monthly rents from 60 to 80 dollars, while 125 sale units include 100 two bedroom homes up to 8,000 dollars and 25 with three or more bedrooms up to 9,250 dollars. The plan prioritizes Sidney locations and private contractors, with government takeover if needed.

The Southwestern Nebraska Weather Improvement Association plans reorganization as directors and many customers are urged to renew support for the cloud seeding program. A car and a Halliburton cementing truck collided on Highway 19 six miles north of Sidney Saturday morning causing 375 in damages with no injuries. Archie O. Burnett of Hixton Wisconsin had stopped to clean his windshield when he was rear ended by Thomas E. Sager of Sterling driving the truck. State patrol noted several cars passed before the collision and Sager did not see the stationary vehicle.
University of Nebraska agronomists report pasturing wheat is costly in Nebraska, reducing grain yield. Experiments over five years on medium fertility soils show yields drop from 3.1 to 10.4 bushels per acre, especially under extreme soil moisture and fertility conditions.
City begins large scale street light upgrade in Sidney with Mercury Vapor lights on Illinois street and 10th Avenue and new White Way incandescent lamps in residential areas. Installation spreads across blocks, with five lights per block targeted eventually and work to finish by Christmas.
Lions Club representatives from District 38 N met in Scotts Bluff Sunday for the cabinet meeting.
