Chief Sol Willis warns patrol cars will roam on both Saturday and Sunday nights due to Halloween. He urges motorists to slow down for children and notes past years showed little vandalism. The goal is fun without destruction.
Preliminary work on Agate Fossil Beds National Monument development will start in mid November with a master plan to be prepared and reviewed by year end. Senator Roman Hruska and Assistant NPS Director Clarence Montgomery indicate swift action once funds are available, as Congress approved the monument this year. A five year program may begin with a first year appropriation of 125 thousand dollars.
The Sidney post office seeks applicants for Christmas assistant roles. Open to men and women, paid $2.29 per hour, temporary up to 15 days in December, some driving duties. Written test required. Apply at the Sidney post office. submit by Nov 2 to the Post Office Board of U S Civil Service Examiners in Omaha Nebraska.
Airline schedule changes take effect October 31 as Frontier expands weekend and weekday flights. New southbound northbound and eastbound itineraries include Flight 51 to Denver and Flight 54 to Omaha, with revised post office air mail cutoffs at Sidney. Four-vehicle collision on Illinois Street near 14th Avenue caused no injuries.
Sidney Chase was elected President-Elect of District VI at the two day Nebraska teachers convention in Sidney defeating William G. Kelley. Ellen Christiansen of Alliance becomes the district president this year succeeding Hugh Purser. New officers include Ruth Flaherty, Char les Morehouse, and Dr. Edwin Nelson. Total teacher registration reached 1 501, about 200 above expectations.
Jesse Owens told a Thursday banquet closing the two day District VI teachers convention that more than any single person the teacher holds the key to America's future. He emphasized the vital role of educators in shaping young minds and fostering national progress.
Dr James A Rutledge of University High School urged Nebraska teachers to teach science as a mode of inquiry not memorized facts. He said students see only frontiers, need concept development and discussion of inquiry results, and teachers must relinquish authoritarian roles to foster understanding of theory and methods. He spoke at the Nebraska State Education Association meeting in Sidney.
The Sidney Telegraph will provide double coverage for Thrift Days on Nov 9 with 2,000 special sections mailed Nov 5 to Cheyenne rural boxholders and four surrounding counties. The tabloid will appear in the regular issue Nov 8, offering advertisers no extra cost. Stores are urged to stay open 9 am to 9:30 pm, reaching over 27,000 potential customers in the Sidney trade area.
Cheyenne County Agent Ivan Liljegren flies to Pittsburgh for the National County Agents Assn convention. He will join Nebraska officers Sunday and later attend the state conference in Lincoln November 8 to 12. The United Fund has reached about $8 391 as of this morning with urging to donate.
In Cheyenne County five banks report deposits holding firm despite a poor crop year and staff cuts at Sioux Army Depot. On Oct 13 deposits totaled about 16.6 million dollars, vs 16.544 million a year earlier, with both demand and time deposits unchanged.
The Panhandle region is forecast fair and mild tonight and Saturday with lows around 30 to 40 and highs near 60 to 70. The five day outlook calls for temperatures 4 to 10 degrees above normal through Wednesday with mainly minor day to day changes, highs in the 60s and lows in the 30s, and little or no precipitation.
