Oshkosh announces the new Public library is in use with remodels adding a reading room in the former Consumers building and expanded facilities. Reference books magazines and shelves are available as work continues to complete the project.
Congressman Don McGinley visited Chadron and spoke at the Rotary Club. He claimed his seating amid Republicans Bob Harvey and Chet Shaw reflected the usual Nebraska Democrat position.
Chadron veterans of World War I met at the Legion Club for the 23rd annual meeting with 24 of 31 members present. New officers elected by unanimous ballot include Barkey Lecher as president and A J Courshon as vice president. A Cognac bottle, saved since 1927, is passed along until only one member remains to drink.
Deuel County farmers report a bumper grain sorghum harvest despite hot dry conditions with yields averaging 30 to 35 bushels per acre and highs to 73, lows around 15. Drying sorghum poses challenges as elevators plug and buyers hesitate. A county wide crop drying clinic is set for Friday Oct 30 at 1 00 p.m. at the Devel County Court House.
The 1959 Longhorn from Kinball County High School placed first in Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s high school yearbook competition. It won the offset yearbook division for senior high schools with three hundred or fewer students.

An automobile reported stolen from Sidney Sunday evening was found in Cheyenne Wyoming about 90 minutes later. Two 15 year old youths were taken into custody identified as John Clark and Jerry Thoner. The vehicle owned by Mrs Herbert Little of 1694 Ill was reported missing around 9 30 p m Cheyenne police notified Sidney authorities at 10 55 p m that the car had been recovered with two youths in custody.
Nebraska drivers with licenses issued in the last two years expire Sept 1. A 69 day renewal grace ends this month. After four more days, renewals require a driver’s license exam before new licenses issued. Cheyenne County Friday is last day to renew without testing.
Two gunmen captured on the J. P McKenzie ranch northwest of Iliff face several felony counts as deputy district attorney John Edwards considers aggravated robbery at gunpoint assault with a deadly weapon and car theft. The pair known as Owen Chartrand and Francis Martin, with prior records, allegedly stole cars across states and abandoned a patrol car during a high speed manhunt ending near the McKenzie ranch.
About eight miles southwest of Sidney a stubble fire at the Charles Jacobsen place was reported at 8 55 a m Sunday. Firemen said the blaze was believed caused by careless hunters and sent a dozen firefighters to the scene.
Cheyenne County leads Nebraska oil exploration with six of sixteen drilling notices filed last week. Director E C Reed lists wells across Banner Kimball Hitchcock and Cheyenne counties including Weaver Huffman Dorman Olsen Olsen Campbell and Frerichs wildcats and other fields.
About 100 delegates attended the Nebraska County Assessors convention in Scottsbluff for a three day session. J B Ruttner served as a delegate, with Earl Long elected president, Ivan Stark as vice president, Fred Arnholt as second vice president, and Mrs Joy Nixon named secretary treasurer.

A record turnout is expected at the District VI Nebraska Teachers Assn convention in Scotts Bluff. T. R. Tillotson of Sidney and J. F. Anderson of Harrisburg vie for district president, with Leona Eberly and Marie Terret as vice candidates. Russell Pedersen and Orwin White run for secretary and treasurer, respectively. The event runs Wednesday registration at 4 pm and Thursday sessions from 7 30 am to Friday afternoon, with speakers Ralph Spencer, Rev. Bob Richards, John Morley, and Morris Barr featured at sessions and banquet.
Swift and Company workers at the Scottsbluff plant end a seven week strike after their union approved a contract. Foremen were told to return workers to the job Monday if no pickets are present. The Scottsbluff Local 94 of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen approved a two year agreement with wage increases from 14 to 15 cents an hour plus improved fringe benefits. Vern Nissen, local president, awaits word from Chicago on the contract outcome.
Funeral services were held for William Bascom Wrather 69 found dead from a heart attack in his Ordville home Friday noon He was a World War I veteran former Oklahoma Texas farmer and retired in 1954 He is survived by his wife Vera Chesebro Watson and two sisters Agnes Mitchell and Amy Outterside.
The Foster Lumber Company of Gurley announces it will terminate business and close the Gurley yard. The complete sell-out includes tools lumber building supplies paint and hunting equipment as employees thank friends and customers for past support.
The 1960 United Fund has reached the halfway point with $7,500 collected toward the $15,000 goal. Some firms remain uncontacted as volunteers plan a week-long clean-up to secure the remaining gifts and pledges.
Four Sidney area youths comprise the District VII team competing Tuesday in the Nebraska Land Judging Contest at West Point in Cuming County. More than 130 youths compete for 200 in awards. 21 FFA teams and 14 4 H teams attend. Winning teams go to the National Land Judging Contest in Oklahoma City April 28 29.
State Farmers Union President Elton Berck of Lincoln spoke at the Sidney National Guard post the annual District I Farmers Union meeting. He described a National tour of seven European countries and contrasted labor practices with the United States while noting Cologne and Burg observations and France farm staffing. District officers were to be elected later.
A 10 year old Brownson youth may face juvenile charges after placing a concrete block on Union Pacific tracks near Brownson. A freight train struck the block breaking it up. the train continued. Sheriff W W Schulz and a UP agent investigated, noting the incident occurred Saturday between 5 and 6 pm. The boy said he was curious and thought the engine would suck it up.
