Joe Kielian, a Sidney area farmer, reports three years of success planting corn directly into sod with no till. He uses a slot planter, Paraquat for weed control, and irrigation to grow about 200 acres of no till corn including popcorn. Cattle graze harvested fields and benefit from less dirt in harvested ears.
Cheyenne County begins uniform re evaluation of property led by Brandt Appraisal Co with Jan 1 1978 target. Officials expect values to rise but say re evaluation aims to equalize assessments not raise taxes. Public info will be provided as available.
Ray Davis of Potter will address the Cheyenne County Wheat Growers Association on international trade at its annual meeting. The event is scheduled for 6 30 p.m Wednesday Oct 27 at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel in Sidney. Election of new officers will also be held.
Sidney's United Fund reports 9431 collected toward a 1977 goal of 16750. secretary treasurer Carol Niekum notes sizable pledges, including about 550 from Union Pacific Railroad, are still expected. Contributions may be mailed to Box 502 Sidney or left at the Chamber of Commerce.
Sidney merchants plan their annual Moonlight Sale Tuesday from 7 to 10 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce. An advertising insert appears in today’s Telegraph with plans for the Telegraph’s Christmas edition in the November 24 issue.
The Sidney City Council meets tonight at 7:30 in council chambers to consider contracts for fence nets and other tennis court accessories at Legion Park. It will also review a traffic signal resolution for 11th and Illinois an ordinance fixing mayor and council salaries and authorize bids for demolishing the Oberfelder building at 800 block of 10th Avenue.

County Clerk Bob Hessle reports high voter interest with 5,573 registered by Oct 15 and a possible final near 5,800. Registrants include 3,057 Republicans 2,311 Democrats and 205 independents. Polling places unchanged since May. A sample ballot will appear in Wednesday's Telegraph.
Mrs. Herb Inez Krauter of Dalton area creates four to five quilts plus as many afghans yearly. She donates thirty seven quilts and stores about half as keepsakes, aided by a frame her husband built. Her work includes cross stitched and pieced quilts and crocheted afghans done after a heart attack.
