Sidney hosts Moonlight Madness Tuesday with Bargain Night and Fun Night. Stores reopen brimming with bargains hospitality and good will. The event aims to save money and build community while keeping its impact.
The Egging Cab Company of Gurley trialed an experimental rail carload shipment of 20 cabs to Edmonton, Alberta, marking their first rail move beyond express trucking. Costs, cab condition, and transit time are key factors as they assess a potential 85 foot car option to cut shipping costs, with rail take about seven days versus forty hours by truck. Ted Egging plans to inspect the loaded car on arrival and weigh operational viability. Burlington Railroad assisted, cabs mounted two rows on a 60 foot flat car with specialized anchoring and a shock recorder to monitor handling.
Dalton teen James J. Pelster, 19, a Navy hospital corpsman attached to the Marines, recalls his first Vietnam firefight. His platoon, after a week in country, crawled across open ground to aid two wounded men, Evacuating them under fire, Pelster earned praise from his platoon leader and fellow corpsmen amid the Vietnam War report.
The Legislative Council demanded the Board of Educational Lands and Funds explain delays in selling state school lands and set a schedule for future action. Senator Elvin Adamson accused the board of foot-dragging and urged reporting reasons for nonperformance. A road advisory committee to the County Commissioners is being formed in Cheyenne County. The group met in Sidney and will study the county road situation. They have tentative approval and plan to present recommendations at the November 7 commissioner meeting for final approval of the members and their activities.
Dix resident Mrs Theodore Mewhirter was named vice president at the Nebraska Rebekahs annual convention held in Norfolk with elections conducted by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs group.
Sidney police report a motorcycle crash last Friday injuring Daniel Virgil aged 31 of 1718 Fourth Avenue. He was riding south on Ninth between Illinois and Jackson when his 1965 motorbike skidded. Ambulance took him to hospital with injuries to the head, right leg and hands.
Panhandle forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies this afternoon and tonight with a 20 percent chance of scattered light showers. Tuesday will be partly cloudy with westerly winds 20 to 30 mph. Lows 35 to 40 tonight, highs 55 to 65 Tuesday. Five day outlook shows near normal temperatures, highs near 60, lows near 30, and little precipitation.
Feeder buyers paid strong money at the Sidney Livestock Sales Pavilion with eastern bidders showing interest in local cattle. Angus steers sold from 726 to 817 pounds at 24 to 25 dollars, calves reached 33 dollars, Hereford steers around 24, Charolais calves 27 to 28 dollars, heifers 24 to 27, hogs 17 to 18, sows 14 to 16, feeder pigs 9.50 to 14.25 per head, with a special sale planned for Saturday October 28 and listings solicited.
The Sidney Kiwanis Club asks for the names of all Cheyenne County servicemen in Vietnam to mail Christmas packages. Contact Ralph Welch Box 201 Sidney or Kiwanis members by Nov 8. Last year 35 packages were sent. this year more are expected. A fruit cake is among likely contents with dehydrated juices, popcorn, and grooming supplies from local businesses.
Cheyenne County residents must register before voting under SB 167. Sidney residents must re register, with criteria including age 21, six months in state, 40 days in county, 10 days in precinct, US citizenship, and LB 167 registration. Registration hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at the County Clerk.
One vandalism incident and two thefts were reported to Sidney Police over the weekend. Maddox Motor Company reported Friday the theft of four hubcaps from a 1964 Rambler in their lot. Harry Jacoz reported the theft of an oil gauge an ammeter gauge and a tachometer from his car last week. Neil Allison said a beer bottle was thrown through his windshield while parked at his home Sunday morning.
Cheyenne County shows a local median age of 25.0, with half the residents younger and half older. Since 1960 the median age fell from 26.6 while national figures sit around 27.7 and Nebraska at 28.4, driven by postwar birth trends and rising youth cohorts.
The Sidney volunteers won the bid to host the 1969 Nebraska Volunteer Firemen's Association convention. At the Columbus state meeting, 670 registered, and about the same number expected for Sidney in October. Eleven Sidney members attended to present the bid as bids must be submitted two years in advance. next year Ogallala hosts.
A Kimball pair have perfected a fence cleaner to clear weeds from fence rows and prevent damage. Designed by Clark Huff and built by Curley Hensley, the machine uses a nine horsepower motor to drive revolving shafts that pulverize the weeds. Availability is expected in 13 Western states by year’s end.
The Sidney band has received enough tickets for the Nebraska Iowa State football game on November 4 ensuring all sponsors will have seats. Last week the band was 15 tickets short until band officials released more seats and additional tickets came from public response. Band Director Larry Pippitt announced that everyone is now certain to attend the game.
Registrations remain open for night courses starting October 16 at Western Nebraska Vocational Technical School. Deadline to enroll is Friday October 27. Courses include Drafting II architectural and residential, hydraulic system, automotive tuneup and diagnosis, Electronics I, General Welding I II, and Cabinet Making. For details call the evening class registrar at 256-7204.
Nebraskans face the last five working days to renew driver licenses that expired September 1. The window closes as renewals must be completed before the grace period ends.

Eighty bulls averaged $666 at the Coulter Herefords Bull Sale in Bridgeport. The top seller was bought by Chester Paxton of Thedford for 1375, while Harry Davis of Mitchell paid 1200 for the second high selling bull.
