State Line Fire Burns 23000 Acres Of Range Land
Nebraska reports the State Line fire scorched about 23000 acres of range land. I 80 interchange at the Nebraska Wyoming line will open to traffic in about two weeks, enabling traffic to move from Wyoming to U S 30 near Pine Bluffs. Charles Nutter, district state highway engineer at Bridgeport, announced Missouri Valley Construction Co. of Grand Island completed the interchange work and is now performing a 4 1/2 mile road surface project on US 30 between Pine Bluffs and Kimball. The company will move equipment to Cheyenne County for a farm to market road resurfacing south of Gurley. Additional work includes a safety upgrade on a curve on State Route 19 near Sidney with a flickering light, warning signs, rumble strips, and a planned slope to keep vehicles from the shoulder. The changes aim to clarify the division of traffic entering Sidney and looping around the city.

A prairie fire south of Alliance damaged about 23 000 acres, sparked near Hall Cattle Company ranch on Highway 385 and the Burlington line. The blaze scorched 350 sections of rangeland, destroyed a chicken coop, and prompted six fire departments to fight winds up to 50 mph. Damages estimated at 500000 dollars, with 7000 tons of hay ruined and no livestock fatalities reported. Fires Keep Volunteer Fighters Hopping Here
High winds fanned several fires in the Sidney Volunteer Fire District forcing all rural equipment into action. From 10:45 a.m. calls near the Roundup Motel to 4:30 p.m. near Lorenzo, grass and stubble fires burned hundreds of acres along railroad rights of way. One blaze scorched 23,000 acres south of Alliance. crews from five departments fought it. The day ended with a 10:15 a.m. call south and west of Sidney on the Burlington line.

Three Inductees Sent Out Tuesday From Cheyenne County

Former Dalton Resident Russell Mellberg Dies at 65
Russell J. Mellberg 65, a former Dalton resident, died in Denver on Wednesday. Funeral services set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Dalton Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Hunter officiating and Masonic graveside rites at Dalton Cemetery. Craig-Holechek Funeral Home in charge. Survived by brother Clarence Mellberg of Dalton and sister Mrs. Helen Clark of Denver. He was born July 28, 1902 in Omaha and came to Dalton in 1916, later moving to Denver in 1940. WWII veteran and member of Denver Masonic bodies and American Legion.
