LeRoy D. Van Valkenberg Post No. 134 of Peetz received the National Americanism Commission’s Annual Award for 1964-1965. The 51 member post reported activities including Boys' State, junior Legion baseball, a Boy Scout troop, a community hall, Veterans Day and Memorial Day programs, speakers on Americanism, and a Peetz Christmas party. The report was judged at the state convention in Grand Junction.

Charges Filed After Accident at 9th and Linden
An intersection crash at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at 9th and Linden involved a westbound 1951 Chevrolet driven by Miss Sandra Glaubitz and a northbound 1959 Chevrolet driven by Mrs. Arthur L. Pelster. Glaubitz charged with failure to yield the right of way. A milk truck later backed into the North Ward School door at 10:32 a.m. Tuesday. no damage reported. Sid ney Police reported the backing truck was a Borden's vehicle driven by Leslie E. Seibert unloading milk.

Area Growers Will Receive Beet Payment
Ovid Colorado area beet growers will receive final payments totaling over 370 thousand to 820 thousand dollars for the 1964 sugar beet crop, averaging 1.32 dollars per ton. Total paid by the Ovid sugar factory reaches about 33.39 million dollars for 1964, or 12.10 dollars per ton, with Sugar Act payments adding another 2.28 dollars per ton from county ASC offices to reach 14.38 dollars per ton. The 1964 crop yielded 15.51 tons per acre on 18,067 acres with 16.1 percent sugar. The 1965 crop is being harvested but acreage is down to 14,137 due to government controls and other factors amid drought and floods.

Eight County Offices Up For Election In Cheyenne County
Cheyenne County voters face elections for eight offices with terms expiring in 1966 except for Sydney Finch and A. A. Fenske who will serve two more years. Several officials have four year terms left, filing windows open after salary schedules are set, with primary May 3 and general November 1. County salaries were raised to 4400 for officials, above the 4200 minimum for Class 3 counties, and filing can occur anytime after salaries are fixed. The commission also appointed Marion Whitaker to the County Veterans Board and purchased 600 tee posts and 100 rolls of snow fence for 1426 from L A Foster Lumber Co.

Inductees Called From Cheyenne County
Two men were sent for induction from Cheyenne County on Monday per Mrs. Louis Johnson, clerk of the selective service board. Paul J. Ringleman and Wilfred A. Lyons Jr. are now in basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The six inductees call was not filled due to college deferrals until Oct. 1 and enlistments in other services. Four men were sent to Denver for army physicals this month. The November call aims for two inductees and seven physicals. a heavier call is expected in December.

Highly rated Cheyenne County 4-H judging team earned third place in the Crops Judging and Grain Identification contest at the State Wheat Show in Alliance. Lancaster County took first and second.
