The Sidney Lions Club installed a commemorative sign marking the Sidney to Deadwood trail starting point near the County Fair Grounds. Delays in painting prevented completion in time for the Centennial celebration.
State aid under LB448 could cut Sidney school levy by about 12.3 mills in the 1968-69 budget year, with an estimated $189,262 aid for the district based on current valuations. The plan would fund foundation amounts per pupil and degreed-teacher stipends, though full funding remains uncertain pending legislative actions and revenue changes.
About 50 Sidney teenagers plan a Christmas toy repair project. The Vocational Club at Sidney High School and the Sidney Youth Council will collect and repair toys, with Everett as Vocational Club sponsor. They seek old toys for future collection and will announce details soon.
Sidney Police logged two vandalism incidents recently. A front window at Fix Pharmacy in the Jones Center was broken by bricks found inside the store. No items missing. Clara Cline reported a cut garden hose in her yard on Sunday night.
The Panhandle forecasts show fair conditions tonight and Thursday with low temperatures from 30 to 40 degrees and highs Thursday in the 65 to 75 range. Rain chances are under five percent. Five day outlook suggests highs in the 60s and lows in the 30s with minimal precipitation.
Ten Sidney firemen will attend the 11th annual Nebraska State Volunteer Firemen Association convention in Columbus on Oct 19 21 22. They will bid for the 1969 convention in Sidney. The three day event includes meetings a memorial service and workshops with a parade featuring old firefighting equipment at 2 30 p m Friday. Sidney entrants are Dan Frerichs Marion Stone Tim Jenser Dean Stettner Mike Hartzler Guy Weaver Dean Bayne Jim Paxton Lloyd Bauer and Bob Roderick.
Nebraska crops expert L N Leininger warns frost and drought damaged sorghum across the state should be harvested immediately to prevent further losses. Severely damaged fields may lodge and stalks decay quickly. if harvesting is impossible, grazing is an option though greatest return comes from removing the crop for storage as grain or forage.
Two Sidney men face disturbance charges after allegedly breaking a door at the West Hotel room two and upsetting Curtis Bevel and Bill Lay. Eugene Rowley pleaded not guilty and posted 125 dollar bond. his Oct 23 hearing was set for 2 p.m. Bill Stimple has not yet appeared before the court as the investigation continued.

The 6th District teachers convention will be in Scottsbluff on October 26 and 27. The meeting rotates among Sidney, Alliance, Chadron and Scottsbluff while program details are announced soon. Most western Nebraska teachers attend their local convention though they may attend other districts.
Four quarters of unimproved land from the Weyerts estate sold for 63000 at an estate auction in Gurley on Monday. Purchases included Robert Rexroth at 15400 for SW1/4 Sec 28 16 49, Cornelius Weyerts at 21500 for SW1/4 Sec 25 16 48, and Percy Dimick for 26100 covering two adjoining quarters. Each tract’s cropland, wheat and barley bases noted. sale averages ranged from about 81 to 134 per acre. Court records show sale must be confirmed before official, with one third growing crops and half mineral rights conveyed. Frank J. Mattoon named sale referee.
A McCook couple on Highway 30 east of Sidney were involved in a single vehicle crash when the wife allegedly took the wheel while the husband adjusted a car radio. The car veered into a ditch and struck a telephone pole. Guy E. Nicholson, 69, was treated at Memorial Hospital for a badly lacerated upper lip. Vehicle damage was about 1200 dollars.
Nebraska labor data shows September placements rose 30 percent with 8 064 people placed. Gains driven by a 244 percent surge in agricultural hires and 85 percent rise in ordnance manufacturing, plus 11 percent in food manufacturing and 10 percent in other manufacturing. Government, utilities and transport also up. unemployment claims rose. Alliance reports worker shortages. Scottsbluff sees modest nonagricultural demand.
Nebraska Governor Norbert Tiemann will be the noon speaker at the 25th annual Nebraska Wheat Show in Sidney on November 2. The event opens with a senior wheat show at 9:30 am for 4-H and FFA youths, followed by a noon luncheon at St. Pat's Youth Center where the governor will speak. Officials note awards, judging, and a post lunch talk by Willis Edmund of Goodyear.

The Sidney Chamber of Commerce seeks ten Welcome signs taken from utility poles since the Centennial. Ed Cole reports a strong wind last Thursday blew 13 flags away. three were recovered, ten remain missing. Return any found flags to the chamber at 740 Illinois as stronger poles are planned.
The Commercial Hotel furnishings in the closed hotel are being sold as the state fire marshal requires substantial repairs or removal. A. S. Hardy has discussed buying the building with Sidney city officials, demolishing it, and creating more off-street parking.
Two Sidney High School students were injured in a 7:30 a.m. crash 1.6 miles east of Sidney on Highway 30. Janice Gell, 17, and Peggy Sharman, 16, were taken to Memorial hospital after their car hit a semi trailer’s rear dual tires. Trooper Max Tibach credited seat belt use for saving their lives. The truck driver also wore a seat belt. Condition updates were not immediately available.
Sidney and 58 other Nebraska high schools will join the University of Nebraska Band Day on November 4. More than 3,500 musicians participate in a downtown Lincoln parade at 9 15 a m and a Memorial Stadium concert during halftime of the Nebraska Iowa State game. Sponsor tickets are scarce with 25 needed for Sidney and only ten allocated.
