Delegates urged liberalized pensions for WWI veterans
The State Veterans of Foreign Wars delegates ended a two day session with a resolution seeking a liberalized pension program for aging World War I veterans and Korea service, plus no pension reductions during hospitalization. The meeting drew over 200 VFW and auxiliary members and highlighted progress on an 18e VFW membership drive.

1500 Feet Of Oil In Promising Find Near Red Willow
McCook reports a newly discovered oilwell on the Ed Reiners Farm about six miles southeast of Red Willow. A drill stem test in the Langsings Kansas City formation showed 1571 feet of oil with 600 feet of gas and 15 feet of mud oil. Sterling Drilling Co. drilled for Frontier Refining Co. The Reiners find is described as potentially as good as the Warner field, with about 18 producing wells in the field located roughly 10 miles southeast of the discovery. Red Willow lies 12 miles east of McCook.

Nebraska Oil and Gas Commission names Sidney site for field office
The Nebraska Oil and Gas Commission designated Sidney as its field office site and named 33 year old H N Rhodes of Wayne Neb as paid full time Commission Director. Rhodes, production engineer for British American Oil, has a long background in oil regulation and engineering roles in New Mexico and at the State Land Office. He is a Marine veteran with a family and holds a degree from the New Mexico School of Mines. The director and deputies may inspect oil and gas properties to enforce conservation rules and report violations. The commission will also send the director to Denver on Tuesday to study Colorado operations.

Dr Donaty and Kline of Lincoln, longtime executive secretary of the Nebraska State Education Assn, has resigned after five years to become director of Educational Research for the F and Compton Co publishers of Compton's Encyclopedia. The NSLEA will consider a successor at its November meeting. Kline, a native Nebraskan, is son of Dr Barton L. Kline president of Nebraska State Teachers College at Chadron.

Military Office Sees Second Vacancy In Months
Cheyenne County Agent's office reports its second vacancy in recent months. Assistant County Agent Charlie Stonecipher resigned in May for six months national guard duty. Replaced by Len Koertner of Bladen a 1959 UNL agriculture grad, Koertner now inducted into the Army. Board will not fill the vacancy immediately. Stonecipher ends service next month.

Safflower harvest in 1959 nears completion across three states
About two thirds of the 1959 safflower crop in Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska is harvested with roughly 6,000 tons, or 30,000 bushels, received so far. Fungible notes cite higher yields, improved test weights, and oil content while predicting a possible total 50,000 acres contracted next year. The Sidney mill processes grain for Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming and nearby areas, with seed transported to five elevators.
