Nuclear scare near Lorenzo ends without incident

For about two hours the nation watched a small area five miles west of Lorenzo amid smoke at a Minuteman site near Sidney. SAC said an overheated generator caused the smoke and stressed no nuclear danger. Security closed the area as firefighters, police, and airmen responded. officials assured no evacuation was needed and the situation was under control.

One Million Dollars in Marijuana Impounded

Federal agents seize a large marijuana haul valued at about one million dollars. The operation occurred on Friday October 15 1965 and involved warehouse seizures and subsequent investigations. Authorities did not release further participant details at press time.

Two Nebraska oil meetings set this month by commission

The Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission will hold two meetings in October due to many cases on file. On October 19 it will hear Texaco Inc. secondary recovery in Silver Creek Field Red Willow County, a rules amendment, and Sun Oil Co. unitization in Cedar Valley Field Scotts Bluff County. Sun Oil continues its No. 1 Brown drilling in Greeley County with two wells plugged. another site is planned in Sherman County. Goodwill Clothing Collection Set for Oct 26 in Sidney

The fall clothing collection for Goodwill Industries is scheduled for Tuesday October 26. The drive is led by the Women's Society of Christian Service of the Methodist Church with contact for Potter residents Mrs James Coulter. Donors may bring mens womens and childrens clothing shoes bedding and linens to the church at 2622 11th before collection. Items are cleaned and repaired by handicapped workers for use in the Denver sheltered workshop to provide training and employment. Goodwill employs over 400 handicapped men and women and processes 6000 to 8000 bags weekly to sustain workshops and store sales fund wages.

License Sales Slow. Ten Days Left in Counties Drive

Driver license sales have bogged down and County Treasurer Mable Jorgensen warns residents with unpurchased licenses that only ten days remain before old licenses expire. Deadline to drive on expired licenses is midnight October 31 with the courthouse motor vehicle window open until 5 pm Friday October 29.

Western Plains Regional Library Bookmobile distributed 10 305 books and periodicals in September. Sidney issued 3 275, Cheyenne County 3 622, Kimball County 1 275, Kimball 1 930, Dalton 48, Lodgepole 200. Average daily circulation 924 with 159 books added to available supply.

Smoke at west Lorenzo Minuteman site draws wide alert

Smoke poured from a west Lorenzo Minuteman Missile site prompting a large emergency response. Police fire and ambulances were kept at least a half mile away while U S Military specialists assessed the situation. Spectators were halted as Air Force officials investigated the cause with local law enforcement and safety personnel in attendance.

A Haxtun Colorado Public School delegation visited the Sidney Occupational Training Center on Wednesday. Led by Buford Clemens and including Supt. Clemens, counselor Al Renzelman, and 18 seniors, the group seeks prep trade schooling under a Ford Foundation grant. The visit spurred interest in local and state vocational needs with plans for future tours by instructors and local business leaders.

ASC Requires Social Security Numbers for Farm Payments

Farmers in ASC programs must provide their Social Security numbers. Raymond Davis, county chairman, says a special reporting form and prepaid return envelope will be mailed to each producer. if absent, report the number voluntarily.
