Prairie Fire Threatens Sidney Area Pastureland
A major prairie fire east of Sidney burned an estimated 100 to 125 acres of pastureland by mid Monday afternoon. Sparks from a train started the blaze along the UP railroad right of way and it spread rapidly northward on a southeasterly wind. Firefighters from Sidney used a 520 gallon and a 250 gallon farm truck to battle the flames near A. B. Rapp’s land and Earl Howerter’s farm, which remained safe as the winds shifted. By 3:30 PM the fire was brought under control but a night watch was planned for spot fires.

Three siblings and extended relatives gathered for a 33 year family reunion at the J. F. Worth home. H. O. Watson of Withee Wisconsin joined sisters Mrs. Joe DeSart of Vancouver Washington and Mrs. Worth, plus Watson’s daughter Lorraine and DeSart’s daughter Jeanne Cole. Callers included Mr. and Mrs. B. T. Worth of Cheyenne and Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Larson of Kimball. The families left for home after a weekend visit.

Knife fight leaves man stabbed at Krueger's Lake
Frank Perez of Sterling was treated at Sidney Hospital Saturday night after a knife fight at Krueger's Lake dance hall. He suffered a back wound from a knife broken off in the injury. Victor and Raymond Morales were detained on intoxication charges and held for investigation.

Army Pilot In Trouble Glad To Be Near Sidney's Airport
Capt Rob ert Hitchings of Newark N J arrived in an F 51 fighter plane after oil and coolant sprayed the cockpit during flight 15 000 feet above Sidney. He and a second NJANG C 47 followed to assist. The broken line caused the trouble and a repair by local crew let Hitchings land. The NJANG team planned to continue to Newark after briefing at the Sidney airport.

Vosika Land Brings $234 Per Acre At Lodgepole Auction
The Frank Vosika property near Lodgepole sold in a 39 acre auction for about $234 per acre totaling $9,100. Fred Quinn bought the irrigated land with small improvements, while Milton Conant paid $900 for one acre and a small house. Emerald Rapp, the auctioneer, said Quinn’s tract was mainly meadow.

Royal Arch Roundup Held in Sidney October 26
The Western Nebraska Royal Arch Masons Roundup will convene in Sidney Monday October 26 at the Masonic Temple. Host Tyrian Chapter No 29 will organize with chapters from Chadron Alliance Scottsbluff North Platte and possibly Valentine attending. The program includes ritual work initiation and Grand Chapter officers demonstrations with about 15 Grand Chapter heads expected led by Harold Thom Omaha as Grand High Priest. A banquet at the Temple with Rev John Maygar Alliance as main speaker and Ralph Carleton Lodgepole High Priest as toastmaster will follow. Banquet tickets are $2 and due by October 1. Visitors will tour local oil fields and Huntsman Gas Plant in the morning.

Sgt Robert Nichols credited with coaxing a confession from 19 year old Rushville youth Duane McLain in the Karen Talbot disappearance mystery. McLain pleaded guilty to first degree murder after a long written statement. Rushville mourns the loss of Karen daughter of a local ranch family. A $1000 reward remained in area stores.

Execution Set October 16 for Griffith if Plea Denied
A last minute appeal to Governor Robert Crosby will seek to stay or commute the death sentence of Hugh Griffith, condemned wife slayer, who is scheduled for execution at the Nebraska State Penitentiary Friday. Attorney P J Heaton of Sidney says he will press for a temporary stay or a commutation to life, noting time is limited and legal avenues are narrowing after the Supreme Court denial. Griffith was convicted in Cheyenne County for the 1952 slaying of his wife Anna. he has not given a written confession.

Two Fire Calls Answered Sunday
The Sidney Fire Department fought two fires last week. A weed fire at 20th and Forrest Streets occurred at 2 20 p.m. Sunday, and a pickup truck on West Toledo Street burned at 8 43 p.m. The truck belonged to Jack Wackerla. No damage report was available for the second incident.
