Fire Chief Arnold Braasch and Sidney Volunteer Fire Department officials highlight Fire Prevention Week noting many local blazes result from carelessness. They urge education and vigilance in small towns and farms, stressing simple steps to cut fires and protect lives and property.
Funeral services for Librada O. Pantoja 58 who died Sunday of pneumonia will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Church Thursday at nine o'clock in the morning. Interment will follow in Sidney Greenwood cemetery. Gehrig Funeral Home handles arrangements. Mrs. Pantoja longtime Sidney resident with husband Lucio Union Pacific worker. Survivors include husband one child Marie two brothers and one sister.
Arnold Braasch, chief of the Sidney Fire Department, says Fire Prevention Week should be every week. He cites that most fires stem from carelessness and lists common causes such as kerosene and gasoline use, candles, matches, smoking material, electrical faults, and faulty chimneys or stoves, noting about one in ten fires come from flammable fluids and nearly 30 percent from carelessness over a ten year period.
Cheyenne County Rural Youth sends Kennie Andersen Delor es McDonald Wilda Benninghoven LaVerne Thomas to Jackson's Mill for the National Rural Youth USA annual conference. Andersen, Livingston, Thomas serve in leadership roles. Group plans three weeks including Washington and Florida with Andersen as a featured speaker on the theme Our Rural Heritage Its Future.
Six year old Cecelia Palmer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Palmer of Ordville, is in good condition at Children's Hospital in Denver after Friday poliomyelitis treatment. She was diagnosed with polio at a local hospital and rushed to Denver in the Gehrig ambulance. Paralysis of the right side of the face and back rigidity were noted. Local physician Dr C B Dorwart spoke with Denver doctors Monday and they believe Cecelia will be all right.
The Lodgepole Valley Saddle Club restarts old time dances this Friday night in the Sidney City Auditorium with music by the Ordville String Orchestra. Dress may be old time or modern. admission is 49 cents plus tax.

Plan for the second annual Hereford Show and Sale at Cheyenne County Fairgrounds on Wednesday November 16 under the Nebraska Panhandle Hereford Association. About 80 head of registered Herefords expected. Levi Hahn Hay Springs to judge the show and Charles Corkle Norfolk to auction. Consignments from Cheyenne and adjoining counties. Buyers from Nebraska and neighboring states anticipated. Field men include Hi Mackey Omaha Stock Journal Ross Miller Hereford Journal Kansas City and Chuck Cook Western Farm Life Denver.
James Q. Gilson resigns as district manager for Massey Harris effective October 8. He will return to his former Mead Farm Equipment Company sales rep role in Omaha. A replacement will arrive in Sidney this week. Gilson cites housing conditions in Sidney and will relocate to Nor York.
Frank Edwinn bass baritone opens Civic Music Association season with lively stage presence and versatile voice. He delivers La Calunnia from Barber of Seville and a tender Chanson while audience responds with enthusiasm. Fireman spectator comments on wind. Continued on Page Six.
Nebraska State Railway Commissioners on October 5 in Lincoln granted the Sidney Cab Company, run by Lewis W. Schneider and Harvey W. Borgmann, a sole taxi permit for Sidney. Ernest H. Knackstedt’s bid to form Yendis Cab Company was denied after a Sidney hearing.
A Scout Skills Show How session will be led by Bob Perin of the national Boy Scouts council at Sidney Junior High School at 7 30 in the evening. Harold Wooten, training chairman, says the indoor session will feature new techniques with little talk and much hands on fun. All scouters and leaders are urged to attend as the week long program ends with a weekend camping at Scotts Bluff County Fairgrounds Mitchell.
Lloyd R. Bissonette 34 admitted forging checks across six states with at least two passed in Sidney Nebraska. He pled guilty to forgery charges and was bound over to district court on 1000 dollar bond. Forgeries totaled 10000 to 15000 dollars and spanned Wyoming Colorado South Dakota Nebraska Kansas and Iowa. The complaint filed at Scottsbluff cites a Gering forged check. Sheriff acknowledges Sidney forged checks yet to be traced and no immediate action expected given the offense list. Bissonette was released from Nebraska State Penitentiary on September 28 1948.
The late Bertha Bentley residence at 1233 10th Avenue sold Monday afternoon to Mr and Mrs J W Mooney of Ogallala for 15000 dollars. Forke Bros and Ficke of Lincoln conducted the sale with several bidders. Mrs Mooney, a registered nurse, will head the convalescent home when ready for occupancy.
C A Story was hospitalized at Mercy Hospital in Denver after an illness. He had attended a Guarantee Mutual Insurance Agency meeting in Colorado Springs with his wife and was earlier treated in Colorado Springs, released after two weeks, then moved to Denver for further care before continuing to Sidney.
The weekend weather in Sidney failed to bring the predicted snow storm. Temperatures dipped to 30 degrees with a heavy Sunday night rain of .44 inch at the CAA station west of Sidney. A violent wind storm followed Sunday night, with minor wire damages but no major losses reported by Monday noon. Monday cleared to bright skies, with forecasts of returning Indian Summer and farmers hopeful for continued dry spell to finish 1949 harvest activities. Rain covered Kimball Bridgeport Chappell triangle. Sidney experienced a brief downpour. fall wheat benefited from the rainfall. Official reports Monday noon forecast warm, seasonable weather with eastern showers.
Everett Eldred and son Victor sold cattle to Wesley Huff of Alliance in a single transaction worth over a quarter of a million dollars. Huff will ship the cattle to Iowa and Illinois feedlots on consignment. On Wednesday 844 yearling heifers were driven to Lisco and loaded onto Union Pacific stock cars. On Thursday October 13 the 1949 yearling steer crop totaling 1300 head will be driven to Lisco for shipment to eastern feed lots. Officials of Union Pacific railroads will be present for the loading of carload lots destined for fourteen Illinois and other feedlots.
The Chamber of Commerce seeks public help to provide sleeping rooms for the Sixth District Teacher convention on October 26 and 27, estimating about one thousand attendees. While some rooms have been secured, few applicants have arrived, and private homes are urged to host visitors as hotels and tourist camps are already reserved. Sidney will be weighed as a potential future meeting site based on housing capacity.
Captain C J Sanders announced 34 new patrolmen assigned to active duty. Donald Born of Plainview joins Mel Busekist in Sidney area after training at Camp Ashland. Five graduates placed on reserve. six months with veterans before permanent posts. Also named are Wayne F Rowe of Sidney at Ashland and Norman L Patterson of Potter at Fremont.
Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation leaders kick off a statewide drive across 53 counties with two member teams each, aiming for 25 000 memberships. The kickoff included banquets October 10 and plans call for contacting every farm family not yet joined, with a cleanup drive later in the week.
Rudy's Inc. seeks a one story cement block addition at 2245 Illinois with estimated cost 2500. Wilbur LeBeault plans three one story cabins on Rose Street between 10th and 11th costing 6000. American National Bank requests reconstructing the sidewalk along the bank at an estimated 300.
The Kerr-McGee Co. drilling rig used for Ohio Co.'s first well in Cheyenne County was moved last week to a new location seven miles west of Cheyenne. Stored at Mary Egging No. 1 since last June, the rig is much larger than prior Ohio rigs and can drill deeper.
Nebraska’s 1949 statewide Wheat Show will be held in Gordon on November 30. J D Borman announces Gordon Chamber of Commerce presidency. Open to any Nebraska wheat grower with entries due to local agents or directly to the committee.
Six hundred adult pheasants are being distributed in Cheyenne by the Cheyenne County Wildlife Club and the state game department. In two weeks, thirteen hundred birds have been turned loose in Cheyenne County in a cooperative effort to restore pheasant populations.
Women in the Church Women movement urged stronger involvement in local state and national affairs at a Sidney Nebraska seminar. Seventy two delegates from nearby towns attended with speakers Mrs Abram Le Grande New York editor of The Church Women, Mrs Wallace Streeter Washington DC president of the District of Columbia, and Mrs Otto Hackman Nebraska state president. The talk highlighted the United Council of Church Women and its ten million members and influence in the United Nations. The seminar is part of a Western States drive to sponsor church projects.
The Ohio Oil Co. expects to announce its next well today likely an offset to Mary Egging No. 2 in Cheyenne County. A new producer, Mary Egging No. 2, 1,300 feet west of No. 1, shows 1,000 feet of recovery in a test and 4,362 feet drilled, with production planned within days. The field now yields 450 barrels daily from Mary Egging No. 1 and Stueve No. 1, while royalty deals rise as Ohio eyes two offsets on Hopkins and Knievel lands amid water troubles on Knievel No. 1.
The Cheyenne County Credit Bureau changes ownership to Milford A. DePue effective October 1. The office remains in Room 14 Moore Building while DePue revives the collection service and continues other bureau activities. DePue, native of North Platte, served in the army and worked at Sioux Ordnance Depot, with two weeks in the bureau gaining experience. Jones sells to focus on insurance from Room 2 Moore Building.
Clarence Dismond of Sidney faces charges in Cheyenne County court for carrying a concealed weapon and simple assault after a reported stabbing attempt on Tom Howerter of Lodgepole. He pleads not guilty and is held on a $500 bond awaiting a preliminary hearing before Judge Robert A. Barlow.
