C A Bates an employee of Ideal Drilling Company working in Cheyenne County oil fields is held on auto theft charges. He allegedly borrowed a 1942 Packard owned by Paul Palmer to drive to Sidney then Cheyenne and Newcastle before arrest by Newcastle police. Bates remains in custody awaiting a hearing.

University of Nebraska extension rural economist LeRoy F. Snipes tours the state and reports wheat planting is up about 85 percent in the Panhandle with excellent prospects. Corn yields should average 17 bushels above the 10 year 1937 1947 average despite late planted crops and frost damage in some areas. Pastures vary with moisture deficits in Box Butte and western regions while sandhills pastures are in good shape. Bean and potato harvests near completion or ready with yields likely lower than last year.

Collision on Highway 19 Causes Vehicle Damages
An estimated 300 dollars damage occurred to a 1946 Chevrolet owned by E S Rowe Jr of Sidney when it collided with a 1948 Ford truck driven by Bill Gilgren of Sidney on Highway 19 south of Sidney. The crash happened about 7 30 o clock Tuesday night as both vehicles were southbound and attempting to turn east. No injuries were reported.

A state railway commission hearing Monday reviewed Wheat Belt Electric Membership Association's request to build another 345 miles of line across Garden Deuel Morrill and Cheyenne Counties. Attorney Lowell M. Davis and Wheat Belt Manager George Cordray attended. no protests were filed. Although not yet decided, the commission is expected to grant permission, allowing work to proceed on schedule to extend the Wheat Belt grid through eastern Cheyenne into Deuel and Garden counties.

Sidney Public School Honored as National Audio Visual Pilot
The Audio-Visual Guide names Sidney Public School among 500 U S pilot schools chosen from about 800 applicants nationwide and in Alaska. Nebraska totals include three others. The schools will test new methods, materials, and equipment and demonstrate teaching procedures in schools and on conventions and TV to boost audio-visual instruction. Sidney’s Vergal Winn notes the district was part of the original 55 demonstration centers in 48 states in 1948 49 and the only one in the state at that time.

Eyes Injured In Hunting Mishap Near Douglas
Maynard Green of Kimball injured when a defective .30 caliber shell exploded in his rifle during an anterope hunt north of Douglas Wyoming. About 65 miles north of Douglas his four fragments and two powder fragments were removed from his eyes in Cheyenne. He shot left handed and was treated in Douglas then Cheyenne hospitals. The group included Col J R Baker Sioux Ordnance Depot Major Gilbert Levy and Harold Katz. Green had already bagged an antelope before the accident.
