Ferris Preble announces October 12 to 18 as Oil Progress Week in Sidney Nebraska. The proclamation honors oil industry workers and companies for contributing to national security and higher living standards, inviting citizens to hear firsthand progress reports and envision a better future.
Sidney declares Oct 12 through Oct 18 as Oil Progress Week in its tenth annual observance. Mayor Ferris Preble signs the proclamation to honor an industry with a century of progress and ongoing innovation in oils and related products.
The Nebraska State Wheat Show in Sidney Cheyenne County sets Saturday as the deadline to receive entries. Entry cards and rules are available from Mr Liljegren or the Nebraska Grain Improvement Association. The show will feature five divisions including market wheat and junior grain.
Sid ney Elks Lodge B P C E 1884 hosted a dinner for press and radio members in observance of National Newspaper Week. About 49 press and radio officials attended with Harold Lessig of Gurley in charge. Bud Portz and Chuck Laflér introduced hosts and welcomed the group.
Alfred L. Mathews aged 22 pleaded guilty in County Court to a rape charge involving a Sidney girl and was bound over to District Court for sentencing. Two Sidney teenagers, Richard Downey 17 and Gerald Wickman 16, faced charges pending further investigation. Bond for Mathews was set at 2000 dollars.
Telegraph printers swapped copy on the want ad page causing Sidney Office Supply Co to appear in the appliance section. Callers were told they had no washing machines for sale while the Loch Electric washer and dryer ad appeared elsewhere. No harm done, and readers learned Telegraph advertising can blur lines.
Tickets for the Oil Progress Week banquet at the Youth Center on Saturday October 18 are available to the public. Priced at 2.56 each they may be bought at the Chamber of Commerce office or from committee members including R. E. McMillen James Keating Darwin Carney Elwood Pedersen J. H. McNish Paul L. Martin Clarence Derman George Richards Deon Lyon L. A. Lindstrom Clare Hess Bob Cramer and F Cutright.
The elevator sources quote wheat at 1.58 dollars per bushel today. This price reflects current market levels as reported by local grain traders.
Sterling Community Concert Association opens membership for 1958 59 season in Sterling and nearby residents may join during the campaign running until October 19. Tickets cost 6 for adults and 3 for children and college students. The group will present the Chicago Opera Ballet with Marjorie Tallchief and George Skibine likely performing and may stage The Merry Widow. Members only admission applies, with details via Mrs Johnson at 2191.
A special Requiem High Mass will be offered at St. Patrick's Church in Sidney for Pope Pius XII. Bishop John B. Paschange urged prayers after Masses during the mourning period. The pope died at Castel Gandolfo at age 82 after 19 years as head of the Catholic Church.

Final house to house phase starts Oct 22 with women workers, aiming to complete the month long drive on schedule.
Some 500 Jaycees and wives from across Nebraska are expected to arrive for the Jaycee Fall Quarterly in Sidney this weekend. A key agenda includes a State executive committee meeting and a featured speaker Vladimir Janovek on communism.
Donald R. Reid, 31, of Bridgeport, was critically injured at Sioux Ordnance Depot on Thursday while operating a forklift on an inclined ramp. He was flown to Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital where surgeons removed bone fragments and blood clots from his brain. Reid, married with three children, works in the depot salvage section.
Memorial Hospital directors plan a second bid opening for a Nursing Home addition around December 15 after Wednesday bids topped the budget by about 70 000. Plans will be scaled to fit funds, with completion hoped for late 1959 if money remains available. furnishings may add 25 000 to 35 000.
The 35 member Sidney Community Chorus will stage a minstrel show at the Junior High School auditorium with a matinee for school children on November 26 and evening performances November 28 and 29. Bob Clark, the chorus manager, says the production will last about an hour and a half and casting begins next week. George Hinn and Bill Fankhauser direct the chorus, with Jack Weimer handling costumes.
Two Sidney cars suffered estimated damage totaling 85 dollars after a backing collision at 1279 Summit Drive Wednesday evening at 8 p m. La Vera Draper backed out and struck Herbert Rossmeier's car, causing 60 dollar damage to the Draper auto and 25 dollar damage to Rossmeier's vehicle.
