New Oil Areas Opened in Western Nebraska This Week

Western Nebraska sees two new oil discoveries in Kimball and Banner counties. Midwest Petroleum reports a successful No. 1 Johnson-Carolina well near the Wewoka Field with 589 feet of oil in a sand test. Ring West and Heart Mountain show oil saturation at No. 3 John Muhr in Banner, with 180 feet oil and 115 feet oil cut mud. Drilling continues briskly in the Stage Nill and Minatare fields, while a Morrill wildcat was abandoned. A Cheyenne County wildcat No. 1 Easterbrook begins drilling as 3 and 1 Trusts operate.

Peter Meick Succumbs To Long Illness

Peter P Meick a Sidney resident for 57 years died at 67 after a long illness. Funeral 9:30 a m Tuesday at St Patrick's Church with Very Rev Vincent Pelster. burial Greenwood Cemetery by Gehrig Son. Rosary 7:30 p m Monday at the funeral home. He was born July 18 1897 in Denison Iowa and lived on a farm south of Sidney after moving with his parents. Surviving are widow Joan Valeu two sons Le Roy and Dewey, two brothers Tony Sidney and John Gallup NM two sisters Frances Meiers Para mount Calif and Sister M Anton e Louisville KY six grandchildren.

Brooks Rites On Saturday

Funeral rites for Mrs. Helen C. Brooks 54 will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Patrick's Church. She died Tuesday in Portland Maine while vacationing with her husband Denver W. Brooks. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Gehrig & Son Funeral Home in charge. Rosary at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home. Born October 6, 1910 in Sidney to Herman and Mary Van Aelstyn. she married Denver W. Brooks June 3, 1936, and they resided in Redwood City California where he works for United Airlines. Surviving are her widower, her mother, a brother Edward Van Aelstyn, and six sisters Anna Baker Genevieve Patrick Juanita Van Aelstyn.

Museum Levy On Ballot In Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County voters will decide on November 3 whether to approve a 1/10 of a mill levy to fund a museum caretaker and maintenance for the Commanding Officer's home at the Fort Sidney site. The Cheyenne County Historical Association has raised funds and volunteers renovated the building. Roy MacAdam urged support, noting the need for steady income and that similar requests are before voters in four other Nebraska counties.

4-H Achievement Day Dinner in Cheyenne County

About 500 4-H members, parents and leaders are set for the annual 4-H Achievement Award dinner tomorrow night at the National Guard Armory. Dinner starts 6:30 with a potluck menu of roast beef chicken potatoes salad rolls pie coffee milk. Awards for Cheyenne County 4-H members and long service pins will be given along with Union Pacific scholarship winner and 2 5 10 15 year pins. The theme is 4-H World’s Fair with songs and World’s Fair Washington trip slides.

Panhandle Weather Outlook Tonight Through Monday

Generally fair today, then partly cloudy tonight and Saturday. Low tonight 30 to 40, high Saturday 65 to 75. Five day outlook: temperatures through next Wednesday average four to eight degrees below normal, cooler over the weekend with warmer trend mid next week.

Two Cases Of Encephalitis Treated Here

Two cases of acute encephalitis treated at Memorial Hospital within two months include Micael DuBois a baby from Chappell and Stanley Krueger 13 of Sidney both released. State Health Department notes two definite Nebraska cases this year in Cheyenne and Sheridan counties with broader suspected cases in Adams Douglas Lancaster Phelps Scotts Bluff Hall Sheridan and Sarpy. Health director says a U S Public Health Service epidemiologist is investigating and all Nebraska cases involve western equine type encephalitis a brain virus with up to fifty percent mortality.

Rites set for Elfert Ehlers of Sunol

Elfert H. Ehlers 61 of Sunol died at home from an apparent heart attack. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Monday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church with Rev. Clarence C. Boye officiating. Burial in Greenwood Cemetery. He was born December 3, 1903 in Manning Iowa and married Lorene Qualley in 1924. Survivors include his mother Mrs Gusta Ehlers, two daughters Joyce Shabloski and Marjorie Brauer, two sons Elfred H Jr. and Robert D, one sister Mrs Elverda Cameron, and nine grandchildren. He had lived in Sunol since returning in 1946 from Oshkosh Wisconsin. He worked as a mechanic at Sioux Army Depot.

Ogallala Considers Cable TV Franchise Proposal

About 30 businessmen heard Doug Kahle outline a plan to bring CATV to Ogallala with a non-exclusive franchise ordinance. Estimated cost is 125000 with no local financing. City Manager Lyle Linstrom said the city can issue the franchise and 8 channels would be available including ABC NBC CBS and an independent Denver station.

$10 000 Suit Filed In District Court

A $10,000 suit has been filed in district court by the American National Bank of Kimball against Livoni Development Co. The petition says a promissory note for that amount was executed and delivered on January 6 1964 and full payment plus interest is sought. District Judge John H. Kins appointed Thomas D. Brower of Kimball as receiver following an October 5 hearing.
