President Kennedy designates National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. The Sidney division of employment urges Cheyenne Banner Devel and Kimball counties employers to offer opportunities to handicapped persons, noting many are more efficient than those with full facilities. An ongoing effort to employ the handicapped is urged beyond a single week.

Methodist Crusade Sessions Scheduled Across Nebraska

Ten Nebraska cities including Sidney will host a Methodist Crusade for Christian Decision this month. Sidney sessions run Act 14 through 18 with similar meetings in Alliance. The Grand Island kick-off Friday gathers pastors and laymen for membership and evangelism. Local pastors will preside each evening at 7:30 with accompanying spouses on certain nights. Further details to be announced later this week.

Sidney City Council tonight features four bid openings for garbage collection, truck and chassis, billing machine, and dirt moving equipment. Mountain Storm Spurs Rain Across Panhandle

Unsettled weather along the eastern Rockies delivered rainfall to Cheyenne County and western Nebraska Friday and Saturday. Measured from a half inch to about .70 inch with thunder and wind in places and hail in Boulder. A brief Saturday shower added moisture to Sidney area. the rain helps winter wheat but does not delay beet harvest.

Stolen Car Returned After Borrowing Misunderstanding

A used car lot owner reported a car stolen to the Highway Safety Patrol on Friday night. The vehicle had been lent by the dealer's son to two young men for a trip to Alliance. They were picked up in Bridgeport and spent the night there before the misunderstanding was cleared up Saturday morning.

19 Year Old Killed In Car Upset Sunday

Cheyenne County reports its fifth traffic fatality of the year from a one car crash on Highway 19 near Sidney at 7 45 pm Sunday. Miss Georgia Gomez 19 of San Bernardino Calif the driver of the northbound 1962 Dodge wagon died. Five others were in the car four were hospitalized. Authorities say the right front wheel dropped off the pavement the vehicle veered off rolled over and Gomez was likely ejected. Passengers include Robert Lord 22 Minneapolis Jackie Moore 19 address undown Betty Sheresh 18 San Antonio and Rose Marie Girouard 22 Fitchburg Mass all hospitalized. Marcia Neiger 23 Salem Ore not hospitalized. Vehicle was part of a caravan of five mag sales cars for Periodical Sales Co Birmingham Ala bound from Colorado Springs Colo to Sidney. Damages estimated at 1500. Remains at Gehrig Son Funeral Home.

Denver man to face fictitious license plate charges in Gomez death

County Attorney P. J. Heaton Sr. announced charges will be filed against Richard H. Reinholtz of Denver for using fictitious license plates. Reinholtz claimed co-ownership of the car involved in Miss Gomez’s death, while a second Denver man contends full ownership and has been seeking the vehicle for two months. Investigation continues.

Mrs Ahrens Dies in Sidney Funeral Wednesday

Ida Luella Ahrens a Sidney resident since 1906 died Saturday night at Memorial Hospital after a period of ill health. Funeral services will be Wednesday at First Methodist Church at two o'clock with Rev John Stayton officiating. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery beside her husband Albert Edward Ahrens who died in 1941. The Craig Mortuary in charge. She was born Sept 17 1887 in Omaha. Survived by two sons Fred M Ahrens of Elkhart Indiana Russell E Ahrens of Madison New Jersey and a daughter Mrs Harry Barnhart of Parkston South Dakota plus sister Miss Fred Hammer of Denver. A graduate of Sidney High School a 50 year Methodist member active in the choir and past WSCS president and past matron of the Eastern Star. Body to lie in state at The Craig Mortuary seven to nine o'clock Tuesday evening.

United Fund Short of Goal As $6,000 Gap Stands

CAP Leads Search For Doomed Private Plane

The Sidney Civil Air Patrol unit headed the Saturday search for a missing red and white Mooney Mark 21 four seater. Charles Hughes of Imperial and his brother DeForrest Hughes of Lincoln were found dead after crashing 22 miles northeast of Scottsbluff. Eight CAP planes from Sidney plus others from Scottsbluff and Imperial probed a 100 square mile area amid gusty winds. wreckage was spotted at 5 pm.

Safflower Harvest Underway At Sidney Plant

The safflower crop harvest is just starting in the region as the PVO-GM safflower plant in Sidney reports progress. Harvest is not yet general enough for an official estimate, with some areas showing good quality yields and others poorer due to variable weather. The plant is undergoing enlargement and modernization not expected to finish for another month, with storage and new processing equipment being added. Hail and cool wet weather last summer affected the crop, but officials hope overall yield and quality will be favorable.
