Beet harvest to start October 9 in Scottsbluff district
Beet dumps in the Scottsbluff factory district will open this week with most beets available by Wednesday and the rest later in the week. Great Western Sugar Co district manager P H McMaster said some Lodgepole Valley beets go to Scottsbluff and others to Ovid Colorado. Five factories will operate this year including Scottsbluff Gering Mitchell and Bayard with Lyman and Minatare closed. Preharvest beet samples show the best yield since 1941 with good sugar content and potential for a crop somewhat above average under normal conditions. Campaign employees will be notified by letter and later via newspapers and radio when to report. Wage rates up 12 percent with a minimum of a cents an hour. 56 hours per week at minimum yields about 233 dollars a month.

Trucker Held in Oklahoma Jail Over Wheat Theft
A larceny complaint filed August 20 against Lloyd E Johnson, an Oklahoma trucker, paid off when Fredericks sheriff advised Cheyenne County that Johnson is jailed there. He is wanted for allegedly stealing 108 bushels of wheat from Potter farmer Robert Thurston. Retired mail carrier with 26 years service he worked routes at Bridgeport Lisco and Redington before moving to Scottsbluff. Born May 1886 in Marietta Ohio he came to Nebraska age 20 settling Bayard Minatare built home east of town. He married Irene Allery at Sidney Sept 1900. He leaves widow and six children.
