UPI reports the Agriculture Department expects modestly higher retail meat prices in early 1978 with beef and pork supplies adjusted. Final 1977 red meat consumption may reach about 193 pounds per person, while total meat intake could hit around 243 pounds, a new record.
The Upper Niobrara White Natural Resources District voted to oppose a proposal for a 1 million acre Great Plains National Park. The plan would place land in southwest South Dakota, northwest Nebraska, and east central Wyoming under federal control, with 800 000 to 900 000 acres condemned. The district asked manager John Williams to draft a formal resolution stating objections.
The Volunteer Fire Department will host an open house Sunday to start National Fire Prevention Week observances Oct 9 to 15. Tours of the fire house at the City Building will run 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Demonstrations of extinguishers and smoke alarms will be held, vehicle operations shown, and rides on trucks offered for youngsters from 1 to 3 p.m.
Sidney’s Oktoberfest earned a nomination in the attractions and events category of the 1977 Travel Industry Awards by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. Richard Gartrell announced the nomination to Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce Manager Ron Monheiser. Judging occurs in November with the awards luncheon on Friday February 17, 1978 at the Governor’s Travel Industry Conference.
A University of Nebraska Lincoln survey shows a strong link between income and happiness. Those earning over 25 000 annually report very happy at about 50 percent, versus just over one third under 7 500. Education and rural living also influence happiness and neighborhood satisfaction.
The Morrill County one room school built about 1900 near Dalton now serves six year old Joey Rieken and occasionally his brother Jimmy. Teacher Mrs Phyllis Vogler has taught there ten years while district officials discuss open spots and potential reorganization. The Booth school may remain open if families move in and a teacher is funded.
Agriculture Secretary Robert Bergland will address about 400 Nebraskans during the Governor's Conference on Food and Hunger Issues November 11 at First Plymouth Church in Lincoln. He arrives at 8 45 am and departs on a noon flight back to Washington. The event is organized by state officials.
Lincoln GOP figures say Rep Charles Thone may seek the Senate seat in 1978 rather than governor. Vance Rogers plans a strong gubernatorial campaign with top finance, while Thone weighing options could hurt the party in a possible primary battle. Senator Exon's December decision may influence Thone's plans.

Scottsbluff plans a 5 pm rally to back the Panhandle farmers strike. Speakers include George Boucher of Ravenna, farm strike manager, former State Sen Terry Carpenter of Scottsbluff, and movement members from Springfield and Cole, with Women Involved in Farm Economics members also taking part.
Columbus Day will close city and county offices in Sidney on Monday. There will be no garbage pickup or home mail delivery. mail will be placed in boxes and collection boxes will be picked up at 3 30 p.m. The last Sidney mail out is at 4 p.m., according to Ferris Preble, Sidney postmaster.
The WIFE national executive board states it has not endorsed or pledged support for the American Agriculture Strike movement. It reiterates its constitution says the program must be affirmative and not attack other groups, organizations, or individuals. WIFE seeks economic prosperity for agriculture and parity, with chapters lacking authority to pledge support in the organization's name. Members may support or oppose as individuals.
