Frontier service air travel in Nebraska is set for a gradual rise through autumn and peak in December, with July and August typically the lowest months. Lincoln’s boardings rose about 130 that month, while Sidney recorded 94 boarding and 106 alighting last month amid weather-related drops.
Robert Lowe 44 of Lincoln and former Sidney resident was hospitalized after a Friday morning one car crash three miles east of Scottsbluff on Highway 26. Lowe, VFW Adjutant, rode with Larry Durfee 40 and Paul Harmon 44 to attend Charles Klingman’s funeral. all were treated with injuries and three were released yesterday.
The State Board of Educational Lands and Funds sold Panhandle oil and gas leases for lump-sum bonuses following SB 8 passage. Section 18-18-49 Cheyenne County sold for 50 cents per acre totaling 229 to Shannon Oil Company of Denver. Section 16-17-49 Morrill County sold for 4.50 per acre totaling 2288 to Tom Palmer Inc. Section 16-33-55 Sioux County with no bonus awarded to W James Saul of Dorough Saul in Denver.
Merrill Lynch will host a stock market forum in Sidney on Friday at 8 p.m. in the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Denver office members will guide both new and experienced investors through the economic outlook, industry prospects, and investment objectives with free admission.
Grand opening of the TV Hospital at 923 18th Avenue starts tomorrow for a three day event. Co owners Willard Emerson of North Platte and Le Roy Johnson of Sidney announce repair service for all television and radio models. Johnson has two years of local shop experience. An opening coupon offers specific values on radio and TV repair.
Sidney Chamber of Commerce Retail Committee finalized two October events. The Christmas Lay Away Opportunity Day runs October 15 to 17 with details to follow, chaired by Glen Patrick and Bill Peterson. A day before Halloween a window decorating contest for Sidney grade school children is planned, chaired by Don Porter with judges Alvin Duis Henry Meysenberg and Lois Ham.
Wayne Rapp district manager for Farmers Insurance Group opens a used furniture and second hand store at 900 King. The buy sell rent and trade business ties to his Sidney venture and a grand opening will be announced later.
Sidney schools offer Type A lunches that provide more calcium vitamin A C and riboflavin per meal than typical home packed lunches. Superintendent Weymouth notes a Type A lunch delivers about one third of daily nutrients at modest cost while a sack lunch plus milk saves money but omits key minerals and vitamins.
Fire prevention week will climax in Sidney with a public demonstration by the Sidney Fire Department. The program includes burning two buildings two cars an oil fire and other demonstrations with Bruce Wilson walking through a flaming building. The Dix Fire Department joins the event to be held on Linden Street between 23rd and 24th Avenues starting at 1 30 p.m. Spectators should keep cars off Linden to keep the track clear for emergencies.
Don James Merritt 65, longtime Alliance resident and former bank clerk, died suddenly at home from a heart attack. Funeral services Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church with Rev. Virgil Anderson officiating. He served in the Nebraska National Guard and later worked at the Alliance post office. Survivors include his wife Mabel Gunderson Merritt, a son Major Max Alan Merritt of Virginia, four grandchildren, and two brothers. Memorials honored to the Alliance Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
Keith Spiker won the door prize at Beckmann's two day model showing featuring the new Oldsmobile and Cadillac. The copper bottom automatic coffee maker was awarded as the prize.
The Panhandle and Nebraska ignite political activity with the Democratic State Central Committee in Omaha electing 30 delegates with half votes and 15 alternates for the 1960 Los Angeles convention. Sen John Kennedy tours Fremont, Columbus, Norfolk, Hastings and Scottsbluff with rallies. Republican events feature Thurston Morton in Lincoln and Ambassador Val Peterson visiting Elgin while Don McGinley leads a 30 day Fourth District tour through Sidney Scotts Bluff Custer Banner Kimball Cheyenne Deuel Arthur counties.
Dale Harmon, Ogallala Chamber of Commerce manager for about a year and a half, resigns effective Oct 15 to lead Crookston Minnesota Chamber of Commerce. He joined in April 1958, oversaw membership growth, and helped expand activities under a committee plan. Crookston has about 300 members and a $23,000 budget. population near 10,000.
Rep. Donald F. McGinley of Nebraska's Fourth District announces a 30 day tour with stops in Sidney and the Sioux Ordnance Depot. He will hold office hours at Fort Sidney Hotel and meet constituents during a planned schedule including school assembly and depot tour.
State Senator George Gerdes of Alliance will speak at the Cheyenne County Wheat Growers Assn meeting at the Country Club at 6 30 p m Tuesday. The session covers annual membership drive progress and farm legislation after his Washington trip with major farm groups. He will discuss a more equitable wheat history bill proposed by Rep Don McGinley.
The Sidney area Red Cross helped about 1,300 people with swimming lessons for 900 children and 350 adults, a 26 hour life saving course for 23, a handicapped program, 16 first aid classes for 225 including firemen and depot workers, and new home nursing planning.
Stan Matzke, assistant to the manager of the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District, told the Nebraska Soil and Water Conservation Districts convention that Nebraska now leads the nation in water resource development and supplies for domestic, agricultural, industrial, and municipal use. He praised local districts for 20 years of effective conservation and development programs.
Gelene Arthur Kayser died at Memorial Hospital after a yearlong decline. Funeral at Light Memorial Presbyterian Church, burial at Lakeside Cemetery Canon City. Survived by husband Arthur L. Kayser and siblings Reese Arthur John Arthur Thelma Yarrow. Funeral arrangements by The Craig Mortuary.
