Windbreaks prove protection and beauty for farmstead
John Sell of near Sidney recounts how a windbreak planted in 1947 with soil conservation aid now yields strong growth. The row includes honeysuckle chokecherry cedar pine and elm with heights from five to fifteen feet. Careful weed control and soil management supported success. The design features rounded corners easing cultivation. Sell notes wind protection in winter and enhanced scenery. He also seeded 15 acres to grass and built a well enabling grazing on 40 acres of native range.

Fertilizer Demonstration Plats To Test Wheat In Nebraska
Nebraska extension soils specialists will establish twelve fertilizer demonstration plats this fall in cooperation with county agents and farmers. Earlier trials near Hebron and Nelson showed nitrogen boosts yields from 10-13 to 23-30 bushels, with mixed responses to phosphate. Additional plats will test soil-building vetch, nitrogen and lime on rye in north and southeast Nebraska.
