He enlisted and shipped from Sidney station in late October and had written glowing accounts of his experiences. Relatives in Cheyenne county await further reports.
Oren Griswold, an experienced local resident, has opened the City Meat Market after a short closure. He has previously invested in local real estate and promises a first class, permanent business serving the community.
J Jer qué nson and Leo Osborn with families toured Banner County to Scottsbluff on Saturday returning Sunday amid fine weather. Miss Mabel Brewer filed on a homestead in Douglas district Wyoming and visits Henry Lauder home while planning living arrangements. Miss Anna Chambers returns from Alliance to spend holidays with family. Judge Chambers and wife miss usual family gathering due to illness and son Attorney Guy D. Chambers in Florida. Dr H B Mantor and Mrs Mantor plus Miss Sperber travel to Omaha. Mrs Mantor learns of mother’s death and brother accompanies funeral procession from Washington to Omaha for burial.
The largest dinner party yesterday was hosted by Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Rudd at their city home for Mrs. Rudd’s immediate family. The reunion drew thirty five attendees including John Davison and Hazel Overlease, who announced their engagement, with guests arriving from distances up to thirteen miles.
Mr and Mrs W F Bassett and Mrs K D Bassett visited their son Kenneth D Bassett in Denver for four hours last Monday. Kenneth and his company were enroute to Cong Island on the eve of sailing for France. He had trained at Goat Island San Francisco and is reported fit and eager for duty. The visit renewed the family’s resolve to support the war effort and assist the various service branches.
Herman Schlueter, our first soldier to go to war, became the first to return home with an honorable discharge. He served in the aviation corps and trained at Toronto, Canada. A plane crash left him badly bruised with a broken collar bone and later heart weakness and diabetes from the injuries. He was discharged as three fourths disabled. Schlueter is a vivid storyteller about his wartime experience.
War Stamp Taxes take effect tomorrow and readers urged to prepare with extra coin. Report notes some town residents improving slowly while others face ongoing illnesses. J J Parks and sons Fred and Clayt near San Francisco company rejoin. Mrs Oberfelder s Denver hospital progress is slow. Mrs Carl Livont returns to Denver for burns treatment. Vera Chambers condition remains alarming but shows slight improvement. Mrs Cook s mother remains without encouragement for recovery.
Messrs and Mesdames McKiernan, Krueger, Stafford and Mets met Saturday night at the McKiernan home and enjoyed a few hours of good company.
A Saturday night dance led by Irene Morgan Genévieve Bentley and Myrtle Fish- Byatt supported the Sammies Smoke fund. The event drew strong turnout with good floor and music, despite a late closing plan. Reported receipts totaled 134.25 in money plus expenses and 102.00 to be turned over to the fund.
