Cheyenne County residents face a $151,720 loss in metallic value as the Treasury plans to replace silver coins with copper nickel alloys. The estimated first year profit to the government runs near $500 million, billing it as miscellaneous receipts. Some Congressmen favor alternate uses.
The first snowfall of the winter covered Cheyenne County with three inches of snow and about .39 inch of precipitation. Heavy fog reduced visibility to near zero Wednesday morning, lifting later but cloud ceilings stayed around 200 to 300 feet until 4 p.m. Frontiersmen could not land at Sidney Airport. Snow began Wednesday evening and left the countryside white and bright, leaving trees etched with wet snow and crunchy streets in the morning melt. Temperatures ranged from 25 to 53 Wednesday, 24 to 32 Thursday, and 24 this morning.
A Cheyenne County official reports a larger December draft with six inductees due December 2 and 24 men to report December 14 for physicals. Rodney Leo Klug was inducted last month and seven others were examined. Devel County records show one inductee and seven sent for physicals, with no inductees this month.
The Sidney Hotel Corp owners of the Ft. Sidney Motor Hotel real estate portion will hold its annual meeting Saturday January 15 at 8 p.m. under by laws. The Panhandle County Assessors Association will hold an all day session in Alliance Thursday led by Cheyenne County Assessor Lloyd Mintken, president.
County Clerk Ralph Englert reports a series of vandalism acts at the Cheyenne County courthouse this year. Sprinklers were damaged, the flag rope was removed, the north door lock picked, and about 100 bulbs from two artificial Christmas trees and decorations from two evergreen trees were stolen since Christmas.

The first half of 1965 personal taxes become delinquent next Wednesday December 1. Real estate taxes for 1965 are due now but delinquency begins May 1 1966 for the first half.
Eight youths and Roger Franzen from Immanuel Lutheran Weyerts attend the Central District American Lutheran Church Luther League convention in Denver November 26 to 28 at the Hilton. They join 600 youths from five states for an All-Lutheran Youth Rally, with leaders including Dr. Elmer Witt, Dr. George Fishback, Rev. Wilfred Sager, and John Yivisaker. The theme Jesus is Lord guides discussions on delinquency vocations and youth issues.
Cheyenne County sees a home ownership rate of 67.1 percent, higher than Nebraska and near the U S average. Since 1950 ownership has risen from 52.5 percent to 67.1 percent, fueled by income gains, mortgage access, and economic growth. Local annual maintenance spending is about 947000 dollars, with national repairs averaging 220 dollars per home.
New three coin set with copper edged quarters dimes and halves begin circulation in Sidney. Quarters have 75 percent copper 25 percent nickel center copper core. Dimes share alloy like quarters while halves use 80 percent silver 20 percent copper with center 79 percent copper 21 percent silver. Overall silver content drops to about 40 percent. All three lighter and designed for silver coin operated devices. Public reaction mixed as coins look and sound cheap but will gradually replace silver coins.
A Cheyenne County inmate serving a 30 day sentence was subdued by Deputies Gene Morris and Les Bosley after appearing in County Attorney John Peetz Jr's office and brandishing a .22 revolver. The incident, sparked by alleged threats and dispute over perceived injustices, ended with the prisoner restrained and taken to a patrol car. Peetz voiced anger at procedures allowing day release.
Wayne Bond of Lodgepole was re elected a director of Basin Electric Power Cooperative at the 5th Annual Meeting in Bismarck North Dakota on November 19. Bond, representing Tri-State Generation and Transmission Cooperative of Denver, has served since 1963. Basin Electric builds the 290000 kilowatt Leland Olds station near Stanton North Dakota serving more than 259009 members of eight rural electric cooperatives across eight Missouri River Basin States. The plant is the largest lignite burning facility in the Western Hemisphere. Bond is president of Wheatbelt Public Power District and treasurer of Tri-State.
Mrs Clifford Dress of 1640 12th Ave won $50 in The Sidney Telegraph football score guessing contest by nearly matching the Nebraska Oklahoma final score of 21 to 9 with 21 to 7. Other top guesses came from Rick Braasch Dennis Marshall and Gloria Fiegenschuh as hundreds joined the year end sweepstakes.
County Attorney John Peetz Jr. delayed filing charges against Bill Schepker awaiting a Nebraska Attorney General special prosecutor. Peetz and deputy Donald Tedesco faced Schepker after he allegedly threatened the county attorney while on daytime release from a 30 day driving infraction sentence. A revolver was reportedly drawn during an incident with deputies escorting Schepker to jail.
The Sidney High School Band is highlighted as Nebraska’s official Centennial Ambassadors by The Sod Buster. They will represent the state in the Rose Bowl Parade on New Year’s Day traveling in four busses with red hats and Centennial insignia. The group aims to raise 16000 dollars for the trip and will perform at Disneyland.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce urges advance reservations for its quarterly dinner meeting on Wednesday December 1 at 6 30 p m at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel. Reserve by Monday night to ensure capacity. Kiwanis last year won the cream can for highest attendance as Rotary Jaycees Lions bid for the prize.
Colorado highway chief Charles Shumate announced Interstate 80s will reach the Nebraska line by late 1968 with the Sterling to Crook segment under construction next year. Most grading and structure contracts are awarded and final bids will follow. Weather could delay into 1959.
J E Kruger O W Witt and H D Robinson named majors in the State Safety Patrol by Col Dan Casey. Kruger and Witt are bound for Lincoln and eastern district duties while Robinson covers western districts including Grand Island North Platte and Scottsbluff. All three have long service with the patrol since 1937 1940.
