The Christmas season in Sidney features four Santa visits starting Friday as part of a month of holiday events. The Sidney Chamber of Commerce retail committee organized a series of activities to spread festive cheer and attract thousands to the city’s shopping center.
Spirit Of Christmas runs through December 25 in Sidney with two large drawings downtown on December 9 at 2 30 pm and December 21 at 7 pm. Santa arrives to greet children, store hours extend, gifts and prizes include a $100 headquarter prize and gift certificates, register at Santa’s Helpers, free candy for kids, and downtown lights feature festive decorations.
Western Nebraska farmers report subzero weekend temperatures have ended hopes for a quick moisture boost to winter wheat. Recovery now hinges on snow cover and generous spring rainfall. past dry year patterns raise concern but some southern Panhandle fields show solid root systems. Many growers rely on federal price supports and crop insurance amid general farm anxiety.
Lloyd L. Schmidt 50, a leading Lodgepole citizen and photographer, died suddenly of a heart attack at Memorial Hospital. Funeral 2 p.m. Friday at Lodgepole Methodist Church. burial Pleasant View Cemetery with Craig Mortuary directing. Military rites at graveside. Masonic Lodge members attend in a body. Schmidt, Cheyenne County American Legion commander, had been in Sidney for County Government Day and attended a Lions Club meeting before his death. He served in the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945, later operated a Lodgepole photo studio with his wife Carolyn since 1957, and was active in Rotary and local boards. Survivors: wife Carolyn. daughter Sandra, 20. son Charles, 16. mother Emma Schmidt. sister Mrs Roy Bills.
County treasurer Mrs. Mable Jorgenson announced that the first half of 1964 personal taxes becomes delinquent as of December 1. Taxpayers should mail or deliver payments to the county treasurer by that date to avoid penalties. The notice specifies due dates and contact information for the tax office.
Kimball county reports two new field wells this week. Banner Oil Co. brought in a producer on No. 3 Forsling in the Inlet field northwest of section 10 in township 14 range 57. Carlyle Oil Producers casing No. 1 Volkmer on the Kimball field southeast edge. No test results released. A new drilling location was announced for Cheyenne County. Denver independent Tom Jordan spotted No. 1 Nelson in Southwest Potter Field northwest of section 11 in township 13 range 53.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce will relocate this weekend from 1031 Olinois to upstairs offices over the Winter Drug Store at 916 10th Avenue, with Western Union remaining in the same building. A two car collision on Highway 30 near Sidney at 7:30 a.m. involved a 1959 Austin convertible driven by Keith L. Chase and a 1955 Chevrolet driven by Lester J. Richardson, with damages of 60 and 85 dollars respectively.
The New St Patrick's High School will be officially dedicated on Tuesday December 1 with a 4 p.m. Solemn Pontifical High Mass celebrated by Bishop John L Paschang. A 6 p.m. dinner for clergy sisters and dignitaries follows at the Youth Center, then a 7:30 p.m. dedication in the school lobby where Bishop Paschang will bless the building.

A Sidney police report details a night time hit and run on 1645 Manor Road affecting a 1956 Chevrolet with $30 damage. It also cites a 4:10 p.m. Tuesday backing collision on 11th Avenue involving a 1958 Plymouth and a 1964 Buick, plus a 2:55 p.m. Tuesday intersection crash at 13th and Rose involving a 1962 Chrysler and a 1960 Ford with stop sign violations and $85 total damages.
Sidney's Santa Helpers drive grows with 100+ professionals enrolled for the 1964 Christmas trade promotion in The Sidney Telegraph. Two break-ins occurred at Big Springs with thefts of liquor and groceries. Montana arrests link suspects to Dalton and Gurley burglaries. they have been returned to eastern Nebraska.
The annual inter squad basketball scrimmage is planned for Friday at Sidney. Coach Bob Cook announced the junior varsity tips off at 6 30 pm followed by the varsity at 7 30 pm. Sidney opens the season December 4 against North Platte.
